Charles Perkins Obituary

Charles Shelton Perkins III 78 years old of Charlottesville, VA, died on January 22, 2025, surrounded by his wife, family, and caregivers. Born November 16, 1946, in Richmond, VA, he was preceded in death by his father Charles Shelton Perkins Jr. and his mother Amelia Jastrebski Perkins. One of his accomplishments as a child in Richmond, VA was being a Polio Pioneer in 2nd grade, participating in the first Salk vaccine to eradicate Polio in the United States. Charles and his wife, Judy McClanahan Perkins were married in the UVA Chapel in 1968. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years in Memphis, Tennessee; Milton, Florida; and Jacksonville, Florida. He served in the VP5 squadron as a radio operator on the P3 Orion that continues to be a vital support in the United States Navy in our country's history. He was deployed to Roda, Spain, and Sigonella, Sicily. Charlie and Judy's son was born at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida on December 25, 1970. Post Naval duty Charlie graduated from The University of Tennessee with a Master of Economics and began his professional career as an Economist with The Bituminous Coal Operators Association in Washington, DC. He retired after 23 years from BCOA and moved to Covesville, VA with Judy. Charlie continued to explore his interest and talents in Covesville by beginning a pony breeding farm, UP & OVER FARM, enjoying all aspects of country life. Charles is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judy M. Perkins; their son, Charles Shelton Perkins IV (Jennifer); sisters Nancy Perkins Romano of Vienna, Virginia and Beth Perkins Goldstein of Roanoke, Virginia; his sister-in-law Betty Lou Hill of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks go out to Dr. Justin Mutter of UVA Hospital, his wonderful caregivers and the Hospice of the Piedmont. Visitation will be at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, VA, January 29, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. His funeral will be held in Covesville, VA, at The Cove Presbyterian Church on January 30, 2025, at 11 a.m., with graveside interment at Monticello Memory Gardens following the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Covesville CDC and or the CASPCA.
