CHARLES RANDOLPH SMOOT

Charles Randolph Smoot, age 85, of Locust Grove, VA, passed from this life on Saturday, December 3, 2022. He was born on May 16, 1937, in Culpeper, VA, son of the late Charles William Smoot and Cordelia Waller Smoot.

Charlie and his beloved wife of 48 years, Edith Hamrick Smoot, moved from Dunn Loring, VA to the Lake of the Woods community in 1997, where they enjoyed a happy retirement in their lakefront home. As Charlie often said, "It doesn't get any better than this!"

Charlie was a US Navy veteran, having served from 1954 to 1958, during which time he was an original crew member aboard the newly commissioned aircraft USS Saratoga.

For many years, Charlie was a Chief Engineer for Brawner Company, which assigned him to oversee building maintenance and construction at The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. (BNA) in Washington, DC, and Rockville, MD. His colleagues there regarded him as one of them and remember him warmly as the "go to" guy for facilities-related activities. He was competent, friendly, funny, always ready with his dry wit, but ever the gentleman.

A very skilled handyman and avid DIYer, Charlie spent a good deal of his time in retirement maintaining and improving his and Edith's home and property. He was also well known for sharing his time, extensive knowledge, and abundant skills with his friends and neighbors. Charlie's advice and guidance were frequently sought for anything and everything with life at Lake of the Woods.

Charlie was a member of the Masons, Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge #64. He also served multiple terms on the Lake of the Woods Legal & Compliance Committee, including as Chairman. For over 64 years, he was a proud member of I.U.O.E. Local 99 where he was an Apprenticeship Training Coordinator and Instructor. He continued to support the union and apprenticeship programs during his retirement. He was also a recording secretary.

Charlie is survived by his devoted wife Edith; and daughter Trudie Smoot Owens and son-in-law Gary. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Rachel (Jason) Miller, Randolph (Jenn) Owens, Gary Lee (Devon) Owens, and Shane Owens, as well as eight great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Patricia Smoot Gleason (Paul), Sandra Smoot Spear, and Deborah Smoot Jackson (Rocky) and many nieces and nephews. Charlies will be missed by their precious dog Nan. His brother-in-law, Pete Spear, predeceased him.

The impact of Charlie's passing will be felt far and wide. He will be greatly missed.

Charlie's request for cremation has been honored.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on April 22, 2023, at Oakwood Cemetery, 401 N. Roosevelt Street, Falls Church. VA 22044.
