FLEMING Cristol Schwarz Fleming "Cris" Cristol (Cris) Schwarz Fleming passed away peacefully at home with family beside her on January 15, 2021. Cris was born on January 13, 1935 in Los Angeles, California to Charles and Mary Reed Schwarz. Cris moved to the Washington, DC area with her family as a child. She attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, where she met her future husband, Jonathan W. Fleming. Cris and Jon both graduated from BCC in 1952., and went on to college, Cris to Bates, and Jon to Yale. Their studies couldn't keep them apart and they married in 1955. After two years at Bates College, Cris transferred to Bennington College where she earned a BA in Literature in 1957. Cris loved children and was a gifted teacher. She began her career teaching nursery school, including many years at Green Acres School in Rockville, Maryland. In 1975, she initiated the much loved after-school and summer nature programs at the Audubon . Naturalist Society at Woodend, eventually becoming the Director of Environmental Education Cris' career interest later shifted to botany. She led numerous field trips and classes (now enthusiastically sharing her knowledge of the natural world with adults), establishing herself as an accomplished and respected botanist and field instructor. She was the primary author of the book Finding Wildflowers in the Washington Baltimore Area, published in 1994. She served on the ANS board for many years, as well as the Maryland and Virginia Native Plant Societies. Cris had numerous friends of all ages. She was a loving and caring mother to her own children and occasionally to her kids' friends too. She and Jon hosted many great gatherings of good times at their home on Shepherd St. Cris was the original "granola mom," a fan of bean sprouts and smoothies long before they were mainstream. She never had any interest in following trends or the world's expectations, instead choosing to find her own joy in her family, friends, nature, and the arts. Most of all she loved her family, each and every one of them . Cris was preceded in death by her dear brother, Charlie Schwarz (Jody). She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Jonathan W. Fleming, and their three children, David (Joanne), Molly (Dana), and Peter (Diane), her seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and numerous extended family members. A memorial celebration will be planned at Woodend at the Audubon Naturalist Society at a time when we can gather safely. Donations in her memory can be made to Audubon Naturalist Society at www.anshome.org. Please sign the family online guestbook at www.pumphreyfuneralhome.com www.pumphreyfuneralhome.com

Cris served on the tree committee in the Village of Martin's Additions in Chevy Chase. Her extensive knowledge was a bulwark of our work to enhance the trees in our small village. We will miss her knowledge and contributions.
