DANIEL BLOOM Obituary


BLOOM THE HONORABLE DANIEL JOHN BLOOM Of Alexandria, VA, formerly of Chicago, IL and Madison, WI, passed away early on the morning of January 23, 2013 after a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Born on June 1, 1955 in Chicago, IL, Mr. Bloom is the son of the late Vernon and Arlene (Bors) Bloom. Mr. Bloom is survived by his sister, Gloriane (George) Bork and nephew, Samuel Bork, as well as an extended family in the U.S., and in Germany. Mr. Bloom was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School in Chicago, IL, earned a BA in International Relations from Northeastern Illinois University and attended graduate school at The George Washington University. Mr. Bloom enjoyed a career spanning both the public and private sectors. He began with positions in the Office of The Honorable Henry Hyde, late a Congressman from Illinois, and in the Wisconsin Legislature. He subsequently served as Legislative Director for The Honorable F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr., Congressman from Wisconsin, followed by positions with the U.S. Import-Export Bank, Small Business Administration and Bankers Association for Foreign Trade, as well as an appointment as the Director of Trade Advocacy at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mr. Blooms favorite past time was sailing with his friends on his boat, the Merlin. He spent most of his time sailing the Chesapeake Bay but also enjoyed numerous ports of call along the Potomac. Mr. Bloom loved spending time at his family's ancestral home in Bocholt, Germany where his family still owns the Bors Bakery. Mr. Bloom was well known for selling his family's baked goods at the Old Town Farmers Market each Christmas. Family and friends meeting at St. Celestine Church, 3020 N. 76th Court, Elmwood Park, IL 60707 where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, 3100 N. Thatcher Avenue, River Grove, IL 60171. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patrick's High School, in memory of Daniel Bloom, Class of 1973, 5900 W. I cannot believe its almost eight years ago. I miss him...

To the Borks - please know that Dan was a special person who could light up a room almost effortlessly. He will be missed. We are glad we were able to see him in July 2011 on our last trip through Wisconsin.
