Daniel Margolis Obituary

Daniel H. Margolis, of Washington, DC and more recently of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the age of 98.

Dan was born in Montgomery, West Virginia and moved to Washington, DC when he was 12 years old to live with his older sister Helen after his mother died. Dan served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his naval service he finished his undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University and then went to Harvard Law School. When he completed law school Dan returned to Washington, DC and went to work for the anti-trust division of the Justice Department. He then joined the law firm of Bergson, Borkland, Margolis & Adler as the boutique firm grew into a major anti-trust powerhouse. In his later years Dan served as special assistant to the Corporation Counsel of the District of Columbia and then developed a full-time practice as a highly respected mediator and arbitrator until he was 92.

No one loved the law, lawyers, and practicing law more than Dan Margolis. In addition to his successful legal career, Dan was a gourmet cook, avid skier, tennis player, and world traveler. He loved entertaining family and friends in his beautiful apartment at 2101 Connecticut Ave in Washington, DC where he lived for over 40 years.

Dan is survived by his loving children, Peter Margolis (Myrita Craig), Beth Margolis (Thomas Kerrigan), Laura Margolis (David Rosendahl), and James Margolis (Laura McDonnell); his adoring grandchildren, Anna Margolis, Nathan Margolis, Moira Kerrigan, Zoe Kerrigan, Jacob Palumbo, Matthew Rosendahl, Milo Margolis, and Hayden Margolis; and his cherished great grandchildren, Robert Jaurez, Bennett Jaurez, Frances Tirabassi, and Oliver Margolis. He was predeceased by his beloved wives, Anabel Margolis, and Sidney Moore; his dear siblings, Helen (Leon) Kahn, and Jay (Harriett and Doris) Margolis; and his loving parents, Miriam and Morris Margolis.

A memorial service and reception will be held on June 29, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at the National Union Building 918 F St. NW, Washington, DC. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Lawyers' Committee on Civil Rights https://www.lawyerscommittee.org/
