David Amey Obituary

David G. Amey, Age 84, Colonel, USMC Retired, passed away on April 28, 2025, from complications related to Alzheimer's. David was born in Lancaster, NY, to George and Marion Amey on March 28, 1941. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1959 and Duke University in 1963. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2dLt in the USMC. After completing the Basic School at MCB Quantico, he married his high school sweetheart, Marge Hughes, and reported to NAS Pensacola to begin Naval flight training. David was trained as a CH-34 helicopter pilot and later as a CH-46 pilot. As a young pilot, David completed Caribbean cruises and served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he received a Distinguished Flying Cross for valor. David's lifelong competitive spirit and love of sports were passed on to his children through coaching and refereeing their youth sports teams. In 1980, he participated in rescue and recovery operations during the Mariel boatlift of Cuban refugees and later served as the Squadron Commander of HMM 261. He received his Master of Science Degree from the Naval Post Graduate School and completed two tours in the USMC's HQMC Manpower Department. Upon retirement from the USMC in 1989, he became a certified financial planner and worked for USAA and Fidelity Investments. Upon retirement from his second career, David and Marge spent many days attending their grandchildren's dance, music, and sporting events. An avid baseball fan, David and Marge were Nationals season ticket holders for over 10 years. David loved to play the piano and bridge, work out, play tennis and golf, and did so well into his 80s. In 2024, David was predeceased by his wife, Marge. David is deeply missed by his three children, Aaron, Zoe Ann, and Joel, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous family members from Lancaster/Clarence, NY, to Idaho and Florida. A funeral service will held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

I am saddened at David's passing. David was related to me through marriage. His Dad was brother to my Aunt Betty who was married to my Uncle Erv (my Dad's brother). My deepest sympathy to David's family and friends.
