David McLean Ashworth

David McLean Ashworth, 82, died on November 15, 2025 in Alexandria, VA after a long struggle with Alzheimers. Mr. Ashworth worked for 30 years as an electronic engineer involved in surface ship sonar development for the US Navy at its Connecticut research laboratory. He spent the last 15 years of his career working in private industry, including Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. He was also a science consultant to the Undersecretary of the Navy and the recipient of awards for his management and technical achievements. Mr. Ashworth was a former President of Wings Over Washington, a designer of sport kites and winner of numerous local and national awards for his expertise as a flyer and kite builder. He was a self-taught and highly accomplished woodworker in his spare time, designing and building a range of hardwood furniture that graced his family and friends' homes. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Baldelli Ashworth of Alexandria, VA, their daughter Michelle Green of San Tan Valley, AZ and two grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at the discretion of the family.
