AUGUST 7, 1948 - APRIL 19, 2025
David Craddock Kane, a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, on Saturday, April 19, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old.
Born in Salem, Massachusetts on August 7, 1948, David was the youngest of three children born to Lois Gertrude Grace and Joseph Anthony Kane. He grew up in the seaside town of Swampscott, Massachusetts, north of Boston, with his brother Joseph Anthony (Tony) and sister Ellen. With numerous Kane and Grace relatives living in the Boston area, David enjoyed the benefits of multigenerational family gatherings.
After graduating from Swampscott High School, David enrolled in Boston College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics in 1970. In 1970, he began studying law at Georgetown Law where he met his future wife, Maryanne Shoback.
He received his Juris Doctor Degree in 1973, graduating with honors and serving as an editor of The Journal of Law and Policy. That same year, he married Maryanne, his beloved wife of 51 years, and began his distinguished legal career in public service.
David's first legal position was with the United States Civil Service Commission, where he developed an expertise in personnel law. He continued to develop this expertise while serving at the Merit Systems Protection Board and then expanded it to cover administrative law more generally at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). He served with distinction at the OCC until his retirement in December 2021.
As a devoted father, David used his considerable skills to help shape his children's characters. His children, Jessica Shoback Kane (Jess), Daniel Joseph Kane (Dan), and Thomas Craddock Kane (Tom) were enormously important to him. He enjoyed helping them navigate the challenges of everyday life, and he was extremely proud of them as young adults.
David channeled his lifelong love of baseball into over a decade of coaching Little League baseball teams. In his later years, he developed a passion for baking, and he was an enthusiastic gardener.
David derived his greatest sense of well-being from the love he gave to and received from his family. He cherished the time he had with his wife, Maryanne, his children, Jessica, Dan, and Tom, his daughter-in-law, Natasha Anne Parker, and his treasured grandchildren, David Kirkness Kane (Davey) and Esmé Salayrac Kane. He also deeply enjoyed the time he spent with his siblings and their families, with extended family on both sides, and with good friends. In addition to his immediate family, David is survived by his sister, Ellen Treat, and her husband, James, of Wabam, Massachusetts; his sister-in-law, Eileen Kane, of Bedford, New Hampshire; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His brother, Tony, died in 2021.
David fought valiantly to be with those dear to him for as long as possible. When cancer finally claimed his life, David left a legacy of deep, unwavering love and gratitude to those who graced his presence.
There will be a Memorial Mass for David Craddock Kane on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 11 a.m. at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 5949 Western Avenue, NW, Washington DC 20015. Prior to David's Mass, there will be an opportunity to visit with the family in the church from 10 to 11 a.m. A reception at the Columbia Country Club, 7900 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD, will follow the Mass.
David supported many charitable organizations during his life. His family has selected two of them to support in his memory: SOME (So Others Might Eat),
