David Meyer

David Elliot Meyer, age 32, died at his home in Arlington on December 6, 2025, after a courageous fight with depression. Elliot was born in Fairfax, Virginia on December 31, 1992.

Elliot Meyer grew up in the City of Fairfax, graduating from Fairfax High School in 2011. He was an Eagle Scout in Troop 187 at Fairfax United Methodist Church.

Elliot earned a B.A. in Political Science from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, in 2015. For two years (2015-2016), Elliot served as Press Assistant to Gov. Terry McAuliffe in Richmond, Virginia.

In early 2017, he began hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, completing the 2,198 mile walk in 4.5 months. He then relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked for three years as the first Communications Director for the Wisconsin Land and Water Association.

In 2023, Elliot completed a M.P.P. from the Schar School of Public Policy at George Mason University, with an additional Certificate in Environmental Sustainability. Elliot began working as a career Federal employee in the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations at the U.S. Department of Energy in 2024. While being separated from Federal service with many of his colleagues in 2025, he was at the time of his death working under contract with DOE.

Elliot is survived by his partner, Shannon Smith, his parents, Cindy and David Meyer of Fairfax, his sister, Louisa Meyer, and brother-in-law, Murphy Protzman, of Richmond, Virginia. Elliot's friends were very, very important to him and he was intentional about sustaining friendships throughout his life. A Service of Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Fairfax United Methodist Church, 10300 Stratford Avenue, Fairfax, Virginia 22030. Burial at the Fairfax City Cemetery at a later date.
