Dion Brackeen
Dion DeForrest Brackeen, 62, a beloved father, brother, and respected media and marketing professional, passed away on November 27, 2025, at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born on October 13, 1963, in Southeast Washington, DC, Dion was the youngest of six children born to Thomas C. Brackeen II and Preslie Boyd Brackeen. Dion later founded DeForrest Consulting, Inc. and was known for his integrity, creativity, and commitment to meaningful storytelling.
In New Orleans, Dion served as a police officer in Louisiana for four years. He was deeply involved with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, working as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and water aerobics teacher. He found joy in helping people of all ages build confidence and community through aquatics.
Dion was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Fern Ward, and brother, Shawn Muhammad. He is survived by his partner of 22 years, Lauren Buggs; his adult children, Akima, Rashad, and Khalilah, and their mother Stacy; sisters, Michele Moffett and Tomi (James) Smith; brother, Brett (Maxine) Brackeen; and many extended family members and friends. Dion you will be truly missed. One of most solid brothers I've ever met. You were always a person I could count on. This photo was taken over 30 years ago in D.C. Best Friends for Life. Thanks for all the memories, "Rest In Power" Todd Amis

While working with Dion at the Treme Center, it was a particular time a gentleman came in and made distasteful gestures. When I expressed it to Dion, he went outside looking for him. Needless to say he was gone but from then on Dion always let me know not to be concerned and if came back to let him know if he was there. He was always a kind person with wonderful and kind greetings. His smile would light up the room. You will be missed Dion. 4ever our NOLA Lifeguard.
