Don Abram Obituary

ABRAM

DON ABRAM

On May 22, 2022, we lost our husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Don Abram, who passed away with his loving family by his side.

Don was known for his hospitality and successful restaurant endeavors, from his early days at Clyde's in Georgetown, to opening Chadwicks of Old Town, and his hugely popular Calvert Grille in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. To this day he is missed by many loving patrons. Don's passion for food and friends continued after retiring. He could be found and continued to excel in the kitchen with his family favorite recipes for holidays and numerous family gatherings.

Don was a naval veteran and served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Midway-class aircraft carrier. He excelled at skiing and served on the ski patrol when he lived in Telluride, CO. Don loved Alexandria and his home on the Chesapeake Bay. He loved life and will be missed by his family and many friends. A celebration of life will be hosted by his family at the bay in early fall.

I recently found an old business card from the Calvert Grille! I searched for him and found this obituary. I'm so sorry for his passing. He and Lynn are/were the most wonderful people to work for. I was there in '88-'87. All of my friends loved coming there and the food was fantastic. RIP Don, you were the best. Wynn Harris Jones

Type of special individual one always glad to see or unexpectedly run into. Always upbeat, friendly and charming. Kind of guy that would make you smile whenever you saw him. His restaurant the Calvert Grill to many was the go to place for a home cooked meal. Turned out to be in my option irreplaceable.

I can´t imagine what my life would be like today had I not met Donnie. When I started my life anew in 1989, he took me in, gave me a job and believed in me. In fact the whole Abram family touched my family´s lives at many intersections over the years. He put up with all of our shenanigans and treated everyone with dignity and respect - heaven knows he was one of the most tolerant people I´ve ever met. Thank you Donnie and Lynn for opening your hearts and homes to so many. Love you, Scarlet

My condolences to all of Don's family. Don was a great employer at the Calvert Grill where I worked and had some happy years. He was interesting, personable and such a fine storyteller from his life experiences. He was also a friend who offered guidance and support to anyone who needed or asked for it. He was there for me. I am so sorry I won't see him again.
