Donald Maxfield Obituary

Donald Ray Maxfield of Fairfax, VA, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025. He is survived by his son, Kenneth Maxfield of Gainesville, VA; his daughter, Linda (Robert) Storch of Centreville, VA; his grandsons, Philip (Sarah) Storch of Chantilly, VA, and Kenneth (Katherine) Storch of Manassas, VA; his granddaughters, Elizabeth (Adam) Baxter of Bristow, VA, and Jennifer (John) Franke of Manassas, VA; eight great-grandchildren: Ava, Avery, Ellen, Evan, Luca, Lucille, Ruby, and Sydney; a brother-in-law; a nephew; and cousins.

Don was born on June 17, 1931, in Washington, DC. He was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Marguerite Ann Gochenour Maxfield, in 2023; his father, Kenneth Ray Maxfield; his mother, Alice Gertrude Thomas Maxfield Maddox; his stepmother, Doris Catherine Poole Maxfield; his sister, Betty Joyce Maxfield, in infancy; and his half sister, Janice May Maxfield Chandler. Don grew up in Washington, DC, and then Arlington, VA, where he graduated from Washington-Lee High School in 1949. After marrying Marguerite Ann Gochenour in Arlington on December 7, 1950, they lived in Arlington until Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA; served aboard the USS Alcor (AK-259) in the Atlantic and Mediterranean; and was honorably discharged in 1955. He and Ann returned to Arlington, subsequently moving to Annandale, VA, and, in 1966, to the home they built in Fairfax.Following his military service, Don earned Bachelor and Master of Commercial Science degrees from Benjamin Franklin University, Washington, DC, in 1957 and 1960, respectively.

Don became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in 1960, initially working for Roy Halquist in Arlington. He then founded his own accounting firm, D.R. Maxfield and Company, in Fairfax and served as the firm's president until his retirement in 1996. Don was long active in the Virginia Society of CPAs, its Northern Virginia Chapter, and the Virginia Society's Accountants Foundation as well as the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). He served as President of the Virginia Society of CPAs in 1973-1974 and as a member of the Council of the AICPA. For his contributions to the profession, he was initiated into Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor society, by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In 1982, the Virginia Society honored Don with a Public Service Award. He served on the Board of Directors of Arlington Trust Company and First American Bank of Virginia, where he chaired the bank's Audit Committee. Don was a past president of the Optimist Club of Arlington and a former board member of the Arlington Division of the American Cancer Society.

An avid golfer, Don was a long-time member of the Country Club of Fairfax and served as its president in 1972. He spent decades researching the Maxfield family genealogy, tracing his roots back to John Maxfield, who came to Massachusetts from England around 1650. Don also enjoyed boating and gardening. After retiring, he and Ann spent time at their condo in Myrtle Beach, SC, and their river house on the Potomac in Westmoreland County, VA, where they graciously hosted their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home in Fairfax. At Don's request, there will be no funeral service. A private interment will be held at Fairfax Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Don's memory may be sent to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692, www.heart.org

Mr. Maxfield was my boss at D.R. Maxfield & Company for 22 years. I started right out of college. He was the most incredible person to work. My years at that firm were the best working years of my life. I will forever be grateful for his mentorship and friendship throughout the years.
