Weiss

Donald Howard Weiss

Donald Howard Weiss, 88, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at his residence in Potomac, Maryland after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 65 years, Carole H. Weiss, and his eldest son, Peter J. Weiss. He is survived by his two children, Evelyn Weiss Zawatsky (Marc) of Barrington, Rhode Island, and Richard A. Weiss (Tara) of McKinney, Texas, four grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson, and his sister, Susan Gitlitz, of Delray Beach, Florida.

He was the son of the late Sylvia (Plateis) Weiss and Jack J. (Jacob) Weiss. He was born on June 1, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, New York. He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1955 from New York University. He joined IBM as a systems engineer in manufacturing and was one of the pioneers in early mainframe computing. He and his family settled in Potomac, Maryland in 1969, where he lived for the remainder of his life. He worked at IBM for much of his life, retiring in 1994. Afterwards he volunteered at the Smithsonian Institution.

He loved to play cards and had a weekly game with the same gentlemen for decades. He was also an avid swimmer and exerciser, working out regularly at the Washington JCC. In addition, he loved tending to his vegetable garden.

The family would like to send out a special thank you to Betty Biney, who provided endless and loving care and support to Mr. Weiss subsequent to the untimely passing of his wife in May, 2022. Donations in his memory may be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or eMerge, Maryland's choices for people with disabilities.

Private graveside services were held at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, 14321 Comus Road, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
