Dorcas and I were sent by the Girl Scouts of the USA as recent college graduates to Pakistan in 1968 for a two month Home Visit and Service Project-- a wonderfully unique experience. Dorcas realized that for the same price of our New York-Karachi round trip ticket, we could go around the world, which we did! We have been lifelong friends, shared so many memories of that trip, as well as many others. She was a bridesmaid in our wedding in North Carolina, visited us in many different homes including Gerrards Cross, England, helped us deliver a litter of puppies in Oregon, saw to it that I had lunch at the White House in 1984, and of course, we were at her wedding in 1996! I learned so much from Dorcas, and perhaps she learned a few things from me as we were very different people with a true appreciation for each other. I am so thankful for Sam and the care he has given her during her illness. I know that Dorcas is resting in peace now!

Dear Sam, Bernie and I are so sorry for your loss. We both remember meeting Dorcas at the VA Summit in 2015. We were struck by her elegant bearing, engaging smile and wit. We had not been aware, then, of her remarkable dedication to public service and civic issues, but her impressive record fits with our impression of her as intelligent, capable and elegant. Professionally, she was a trailblazer who undoubtedly surmounted challenges and in this way, served as a role model for others, both men and women. She was fortunate to find a wonderfully devoted husband in Sam. I marveled at how you managed to continue to care for and advocate for veterans, while caring for Dorcas. You will remain in our thoughts.

For several years I was her Chief Medical Officer at SSA and she was an insightful supporter of the cadre of medical staff in HQ and was a key supporter of improvements in the SSA's Disability Programs. She gave me very useful orientations on how to effectively fulfill a senior SES position on the federal scene. Thank you Dorcas for your 'gifts' to me and others in the medical cadre at SSA.
