EDITE ABOLINS

ABOLINS EDITE ABOLINS (Age 70) Of Manteo, NC and Rockville, MD died on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The daughter of the late Nikolajs Abolins and Marta Alders Abolins, Edite was born in what would become East Germany as her parents and one and a half year old brother fled their native home of Latvia to seek refuge from the approaching communist Russian armies. Edite's first four years were spent in a Displaced Persons camp for WWII refugees outside of Nuremberg, Germany. A sponsor was needed for emigration to the US, and after a sponsor was obtained, and spending the requisite time with the sponsor, the family moved to Washington, DC. Edite grew up in the Du Pont Circle neighborhood of Washington. She attended Gordon Junior High and Western High schools, and proudly became a naturalized American citizen at age 18. She earned both a Bachelor of Science degree in Languages and a Masters degree in Russian Studies from George- town University where she played basketball for the Hoyettes. Edite volleyball on the Washington DC Latvian women's team, and was a diehard Redskins and Nationals fan. Edite worked in the Library of Congress in the history and cataloguing division for Slavic and East European Studies, and as Leader of the German Team for 36 years. Edite was a member of the Washington DC Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Latvian Association, and the sorority Dzintra. Edite was an avid photographer, with several of her photos featured in local Outer Banks and local Washington, DC newspapers and television stations. Her numerous Facebook friends enjoyed and anticipated her pictures and updates. She was a devoted gardener and recycler, and was a routine fixture at the Woottons Mill Park Community Garden and at King Farm Dog Park. Edite is survived by her brother, Juris Abolins of Manteo; a nephew, Andrejs Abolins Holderness and wife, Sydney of Seattle, WA; a great-nephew, Justins Holderness; two great-nieces, Emily and Abigayle Holderness; two goddaughters, Kersti Francis and Danielle Murnieks; and a godson, Martins Zinbergs. She also leaves her faithful K9 companion, Shane, her American Eskimo. She was predeceased by her beloved sister-in-law, Martha Crown Abolins. A memorial service will be held at the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Washington DC on Sunday, November 22 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church, located at 400 Hurley Avenue, Rockville, Maryland 20850.
