Edith Elizabeth Beach Barbee of Reston, VA passed away at her home at Tall Oaks Assisted Living on April 13, 2014. Edith was born on March 13, 1917 in Burke County, NC to the late John Nelson and Julia (Deal) Beach. She came to Washington, DC in the late 1930s and worked for the Army Signal Corps during WWII. She later went on to work as a waitress in the restaurant at the brand new Washington National Airport. Edith later met and married Vilas W. (Bill) Barbee on July 17, 1948 in Rockville, MD. Edith and Bill moved to Alexandria, VA in the mid-1950s, where they raised two sons. While there, Edith spent 15 years working as a teacher's assistant for the Alexandria Public School System, followed by another 10 years as a volunteer at Alexandria Hospital, before moving out to be nearer her sons and grandchildren.Survivors include her two sons, Rod Barbee and Doug Barbee; her brother, William Beach; and six grandchildren.Visitation will be held Monday, April 21, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at ADAMS-GREEN FUNERAL HOME, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Floris United Methodist Church, 13600 Frying Pan Road, Herndon, VA. Edith will be buried next to Bill at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria, VA. The family requests donations to Helping Children Worldwide at www.helpingchildrenworldwide.org in lieu of flowers.
