Dear Berkowitz Family,

I send my best wishes and thoughts to you. Although it has been a long time time since I've been in touch, I remember Ed well and fondly. Whether it was my time hanging out at your house or on a hike up Old Rag with you, Ed was always a kind and warm presence. I remember his ability to listen, and his patient and genuine nature. I feel lucky to have known him and am sure he will be deeply missed.

Dear Lois and your extended family: Gary and I were so sorry to learn of Ed's passing in the December 27 Washington Post obituary. He was a valued member of my Cornell alumni interviewing committee for decades, and only last year he told me that, unless I needed an old fart (or words to that effect, of course) to meet with high school seniors who had applied to Cornell, then he would step back and be available only if I had a desperate need for alumni interviewers at the last minute.

I'm glad that Gary and I were able to visit with you and Ed in late September. Even then, he regaled us with travel stories, and his laugh was infectious. We loved being with him and hearing his stories of Cornell, outdoor adventures, and his family.

We -- and the Cornell University alumni community -- will surely miss Ed and his generous spirit.

With affection,
Judy and Gary Kopff

Ed was a mentor, a mensch and one of my favorite song parody writers. He taught me a lot about how to live fully, from when I met him in 1979 to his last days. Along with many others, I'll miss him deeply. My prayers and sympathy are with your family.

We just learned of Ed's death. He was a lovely guy, and we would run into each other with some frequency at the Kennedy Center and OLLI. Always friendly, open, with a great smile. I will miss him!

Dear Lois, Steve, Peter and family,

Words cannot convey how deeply we share your great loss.

Ed was an exceptional human being.

Ed's passing is a great loss also to the Lane and Edson "family" in which he played such an integral part for so many years and then helped to preserve its memories afterwards.

We have lost a dear friend of more than 45 years who was a colleague at Comsat even before Lane and Edson and whose family grew up with our family as we shared so many good times together.

We grieve very much for him. We are glad that we were able to visit with him one last time shortly before we left for Florida a few weeks ago.

God be with you, Ed

I will sadly miss Ed. Even though I was not close to Ed, when I was near him I felt close. Even though we were not friends I always felt like he was my friend. Even though I only new him for a short time I felt I knew him all my life. Your in my thoughts always Steve Shafritz

Ed brightened Wednesday mornings at American History for his fellow docents and the public. I learned from his enthusiastic and informative style. He is missed already. My heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Ed was both a colleague and friend. As council to our company he always said, "Never call me from the bottom of a hole yelling, 'Throw me a rope.' Rather, let me tie the rope around your waist and slowly lower you into any hole you like." As such, Ed provided us with bullet-proof representation for 37 years. Ed really was one of the Good Guys, and we will all surely miss Ed and his wisdom.

I have known Ed Berkowitz and his wonderful family since I was a kid -- for more than 40 years -- and every time I saw him he brightened my day. What I'll miss most is that big smile of his and the hearty laugh. All of the Lane family mourns his passing.
