I was one of Mr. Burn's 6th grade students at Blessed Sacrament School (BSS) in 1970-71. This Christmas Season I was reminiscing fondly on the wonderful men and women that I was blessed to have as teachers and role models a half century ago at St. Ann's, Blessed Sacrament and St. Anselm's. I'm saddened to see that Mr. Burns passed away last year. I will always remember him as an effervescent, energetic, gentle soul of intellect and humor. When I read "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" about a year after he taught me, I realized I had been taught by a real, larger than life "Chips", right down to the impeccable, tweed suits, vests and pocket watches with fobs. What an experience, even 50 years ago, when most people still "dressed up" to go to church (or even went to church), to have a man like Mr. Burns teaching middle school kids. Among his sterling traits, Mr. Burns had the patience of Jobe to always remain calm and dignified in the face of the the often, just plain mean shenanigans of sixth graders. I suspect this was a factor that motivated his transition to teach university students, who would appreciate his intellect and personality in the moment. I regret I didn't pick up the phone and call him and thank him for being the wonderful teacher and role model he was, when I was in DC five years ago. Good bye, Mr. Burns, and with the greatest respect, until we meet again.

I am so sad to hear that Ed passed...he worked with me as a faculty at UMUC for so many years...a group of us in Prior Learning still get together and I recently spoke with him...he seemed fine them around the holidays...I can only say he was beloved by students, faculty and administration. I loved his colorful stories, his charm and wit...what a sharp cookie! Ed will certainly be so missed! Terry Hoffmann, former Director of Prior Learning at UMUC

It was such sad news of Ed's passing. I already miss him very much, and I know his students will as well. I consider myself fortunate to have worked with Ed for the last two years. I learned so much from him, and I will miss his passion, his dedication, his emails, & his uplifting digital cards that he sent to me often.

Prof. Burns was one of my first instructors at UMUC. I was excited to come to class at 8am on a Saturday morning; His smile and zest for life and love of the work he did will always be remembered. He was a hell-of-a great professor.

I ran writing workshops in Ed's classrooms at UMUC. He was a great guy to collaborate with who had a true passion for teaching, connecting with his students, and enriching their lives through education. His example will live on in so many students and professionals whose lives he touched.

Ed was always so sweet to me when he was requesting a writing workshop. Most people simply request a workshop and the message is brief. But Ed cared about everyone he was in touch with. He was a very loving person. He will be missed.

It was my honor and pleasure to work with Ed at the University of Maryland University College for many years. He was a great teacher who taught we the important role that love plays in teaching. Ed loved his students. Each and every one of them. He emailed them daily. He talked to them on the phone daily. He loved them. He gave unselfishly of himself. There is no higher purpose in this life than to give and receive love. Ed knew that and he lived it.

Mr. Burns, a gentleman and a scholar. He was a beacon of dedication and caring while working with us at the Watch Pocket. His kindness, wit and gift of gab added to his Irish spirit.
His loyalty to his family, friends and former students was inspiring.
He lived and died with the Lord and he is without a doubt sitting at the right hand of God in eternal peace.
Love ya! Cathy Stohlman
