A resident of New York City, a retired school teacher, died November 28, 2004 at his home in New York City.
He was born and raised in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC. He graduated from Western High School. He attended Georgetown University and American University from which he completed his Baccalaureate. With his parents, Phillip S. and Mamie Helig, he ran the Georgetown Tobacco Company, a wholesale concern which also had a retail liquor component until the business was sold in the late 60's. He subsequently went into business in Europe and then, New York City. He then devoted many hours as a volunteer teaching Chinese immigrants English.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Sally Ordonez, Chief of Education for Patient Services for three veterans hospitals in New York City; a brother, Col. (Dr.) Frederick Helig and his wife, Gabriele and numerous nieces and nephews. He was buried beside his parents in Alliance Cemetery, Vineland, NJ. Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
