EDWARD SACCHET Obituary

SACCHET Edward Michael Sacchet "Eddie" Edward "Eddie" Michael Sacchet, 85, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away on March 29th, 2022. He is remembered fondly by his family for bringing a worldly perspective to their lives. Although he was born on September 28, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, Eddie spent his formative years in Washington, D.C., where he attended McKinley Technical High School. Eddie was an accomplished academic. He received a full scholarship to George Washington University, where he obtained his BA in Government Service. After serving his country in the U.S. Army, Eddie further pursued his education at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, Italy and Washington DC, where he received his MA in International Studies in 1960. His ability to speak five different languages contributed to his lifetime career with the U.S. Department of State, starting in 1961. Eddie's career took him overseas when he was stationed in Tananarive, Madagascar. He served in consular posts in Naples and Rome, Italy. At the height of his career, he served as Consul General in Marseille, France; Acting Ambassador in the Principality of Monaco; and later, Acting Ambassador in Martinique, French West Indies. Eddie's last post was as Director of State Department Operations, National Archives in College Park, Maryland until he retired. Eddie received several academic and professional awards including Fellow of the Department of State, the Pearson Fellowship, and Congressional Fellow of the American Political Science Association. He was most honored to return to his ancestral home in the Dolomites in 2013 to receive recognition among the "Bellunesi che hanno onorato la provincia in Italia e nel Mondo," a civic award for people of Belluno who have honored the province in Italy and in the world. In his personal life, Eddie was a masterful accordion player. In his youth he led a wedding band, recalling many folk tunes from his Italian heritage. Eddie also had a great appreciation for fine food and wine: He was made an honorary member of the Wine Guild of Chteauneuf-du-Pape, France. Eddie joins his father, Pietro "Pete" Sacchet of Longarone, Belluno, Italy and his mother, Yolanda (Nadalet) Sacchet of Pennsylvania in heaven. He is survived by his beloved wife "Lizzie" of 46 years, Elizabeth (Priore) Sacchet. He is also survived by his sister, Frances (Sacchet) Petrillo of Silver Spring MD; his nephews, James Gregory Scull, Ormond Beach, FL and Peter Brian Scull, Silver Spring, MD along with their families; and many cousins and relatives in the U.S. and Italy. A viewing will be held for Eddie on April 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, Jupiter, FL. A Mass will follow on April 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Ed was a good friend (suitemate actually) from Graduate School days in Bologna, and we stayed in touch off and on during our shared careers in the Foreign Service, although we never served together in the same posting, and until his passing in our retirement years in Maryland, befoe the Sacchets moved to Florida Now I stay in touch with Ed, indirectly of course, through his lovely wife Liz, still living in Florida, but in new "digs" for folks our age. Liz, we so much appreciated your Christmas card, especially as they are so rare these days, and Giorgina and I reply herewith along with our warmest greetings...and yes, we are off to Italy (Rome and the Dolomites...where I often think of Ed in this his family's native roots. All love, Lewis and Giorgina Murray

Ed was such a good flat mate in Bologna, some sixty years ago. If i can remember him so well, he was something special....we were "assigned" to each other, with two other students, one a German and the other an Italian...all great mates, much thanks to Ed's expansive personality. I recall this guy with great fondness. Lewis Murra

Dear Lizzie....As I am not sure how to reach you, now being in Rome, I am using this venue to express to you and family how sorry I was to learn today via the SAIS bulletin about Ed's passing. I shall always remember that happy guy I shared a flat with in Bologna during our year at the Bologna Center in 1958-59, and I always enjoyed our meetings from time to time after in the Foreign Service. I think we last were together when you both came to dinner at our house in Chevy Chase some few years ago...My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I shall always remember Ed as a good man and a good friend. As ever, Lewis Murray (and Giorgina joins me in this expression.
