For My Mom, Love - Kathy
My mom was humbled when anyone went out of their way for her. She was a no-nonsense, practical lady. Born Elsie Lorraine Williams, she was the 2nd oldest of six girls and one boy. She grew up during the depression, living on a small farm in rural North Carolina. She was hard-working; a trait she never lost. Fiercely independent, she left her family farm at the age of 17, graduated from college, and in 1948, married my dad. They then moved to the D.C. area, where she lived until this past August.
My mom was amazing. She raised four children, worked full-time, and could do just about anything. Gardening was her passion; she transformed her backyard into a beautiful oasis, and loved sitting on her front porch, enjoying her plants and flowers. She was an accomplished tailor, sewing slipcovers, Barbie doll clothes, and coats. A true southern cook, she was famous for her mashed potatoes and Sunday dinners. More than one of her kids or grandchildren called her during a holiday, asking how to make her apples, or what to do with a ham. Besides her managing a busy household (and she did everything), she worked for the State of Maryland for twenty-five years, loving every minute of it. Rounding out her resume, Mom knew how and would change her own lawn mower's spark plugs and oil; she insisted on cutting the backyard (as recently as July).
Elsie loved her kids, her grandchildren, her dog named Bear, and life. She always had an extra plate at the table for visitors, or some space on the floor for a wayward teenager. No one in need was ever turned away, and no problem was too big for her to tackle. If you called yourself her friend or relative, you were indeed blessed.
She loved laughter, a house full of noise, rainy days, country music, chili, and junk food. She read The National Inquirer, The Washington Post, and loved Bill O'Reilly (thanks to her beloved grandson, Kevin.) All in all, my mom was grateful for each day. Just two weeks ago, she held her first great-granddaughter, Charlotte Elise, her namesake (long story). The very next day, Elsie, "Gram" or "Grandma" to most, started leaving us. She knew her job was done. "Miss Elsie" will be sorely missed.
