ELVIN R. HEIBERG, III "Vald"  Lieutenant General, USACE (Ret.)  Chief of Engineers
On September 27, 2013, at the age of 81, Vald passed after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kitty" Heiberg of Leavenworth, Kansas; four children and four grandchildren. He is remembered and honored for 35 years of proud and humble service to this great nation as part of the Army Corps of Engineers, and for being a wonderful father, and husband. He was a leader, scholar, mentor, visionary, and role model to so many. All that knew him understood his charm, wit, wry humor, and love of knowledge and adventure. He enjoyed the road less traveled, and also being in the cheerful company of family and friends. We love you dad and we owe you so much. Thank you and God Bless! Essayons!Memorial service and burial (with Full Honors) will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, January 10, 2014. Service will begin (promptly) at 11 a.m. Fort Myer Old Post Chapel.
