A retired Foreign Service Officer died at his home in Southern Pines, NC on October 14, 2003. Mr. Burns was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a graduate of Princeton University and of the National War College. He entered the Foreign Service in 1941 and was posted mostly in Europe until the latter part of his career when he served as Ambassador to Jordan (1966-1968) and Ambassador to Ecuador (1970-1973). He retired from the foreign service following his assignment to Ecuador and from 1974-1980, he worked at the United Nations to New York, where he was Director of the office of Technical Cooperation. Mr. Burns is survived by his wife, Martha and two sisters. Services private. BOLES FUNERAL HOMES, Southern Pines, NC, entrusted with arrangements.
