On Tuesday, October 5, 2004. Col. Schmidt retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1968 after 30 years of distinguished service. After his military retirement, he went on and was employed as a chemist with General Dynamics in Rochester, NY. After he retired from General Dynamics, he was a Professor at Northern Virginia Community College, where he taught Hotel and Restaurant Management. After moving to Delaware, he helped managed Air Traffic (a kite company) with his daughter. He was Valedictorian of his high school class and graduated on full scholarship in 1938 from Rutgers University with a double degree in chemistry and biology. He was an active member of the Lions Club in Fairfax, VA and Rehoboth, DE. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Flanagan Schmidt; his parents, Margaret Ihling and Frederick C. Schmidt, Sr.; two sons, Michael F. and Ronald B. Schmidt; and a sister, Edna Van Horn. He is survived by a daughter, Pam Hertel, Rehoboth, DE; a grandson, Brett Hertel, a freshman at Seton Hall University, S. Orange, NJ; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Chartier, Bristow, VA; many nieces and nephews. Private memorial services with Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that contributions in Fred's memory be made to the Country Rest Home, 12046 Sunset Ln., Greenwood, DE 19950. Arrangements by SHORT FUNERAL SERVICES, Milton, DE.

Fred was a wonderful man, kind and thoughtful. We worked together during his years at Northern Virginia Community College. While we lost touch over the years, I often thought of him. Fred and Mary Ellen were a lovely couple, they joined us often for social events with the Hotel Management faculty.
