FREDERICK FREI Obituary

FREI FREDERICK STEPHEN FREI "Fred" Of Vienna, Virginia, was born on November 25, 1945, and passed away unexpectedly at the age of 71 on Saturday, February 25, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Catherine Bowden Frei; two sons, Michael Brendan Frei (Minna Kang Frei) of Seattle, Washington, and Ryan David Frei (Carolyn Cassidy Frei) of Richmond, Virginia; and granddaughter, Catherine Cassidy Frei. Fred grew up in Garden City, New York, the youngest son of Charles Gustav Frei and Mary Margaret Dress Frei, with older brothers Charles Christopher Frei and Donald Francis Frei. He received a degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 1968. After college, he moved to Washington, DC, took a job at the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a patent examiner, and began attending Georgetown University Law Center at night. He graduated from Georgetown Law in 1973 and then served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harry Phillips, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Fred worked in private practice as an intellectual property litigator for more than four decades before retiring from Andrews Kurth LLP in late 2015. Toward the end of his career, he developed a passion for teaching abroad. He traveled to numerous European countries to teach university seminars on U.S. intellectual property law. Fred loved spending quality time with his family and traveling. A voracious reader, he was always impressively up to speed on current events and researched thoroughly any subjects he thought affected his family, including their hobbies, personal interests, and professional pursuits. He was enjoying his retirement and adored his granddaughter, Cate, who brought so much joy to his life. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017, at 11 a.m., at Floris United Methodist Church, 13600 Frying Pan Road, Herndon, Virginia 20171. Beginning at 10 a.m., Fred's family will be receiving guests at the church preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations can be made to Floris United Methodist Church Outreach Missions (www.florisumc.org) or Canine Companions USA (www.caninecompanionsusa.org).(www.caninecompanionsusa.org).
