Frederick Lindahl Obituary


Col. Frederick W. Lindahl   (Age 76)  
Colonel Frederick W. Lindahl died on October 27, 2018, after a long illness. Col. Lindahl was born in West Springfield, MA and graduated from West Springfield High School. He attended the United States Air Force Academy and was a member of the Class of 1963. After finishing pilot training, Col. Lindahl served in Vietnam from 1968 - 1969. Col. Lindahl left active duty in 1969 and remained a pilot in the Air Force Reserves, serving in Just Cause and Operation Desert Storm and flying in joint service exercises in the US and Europe, including three Reforger exercises.  Col. Lindahl earned his MBA from Harvard Business School, in 1971 and his PhD in Accounting from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business in 1985. He joined the faculty of the Fuqua School of Business, at Duke University, in 1984 and moved to the faculty of the George Washington University School of Business in 1993. Col. Lindahl was a tenured professor there at the time of his death. His service was recognized in May 2018, with the Outstanding Master of Accountancy Faculty Award.  Col. Lindahl was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and teacher. He loved reading, taking walks with his wife on Cape Cod, telling his daughters stories about their family history, visiting with his sisters and playing baseball with his grandsons. He cherished visits to Shenandoah National Park and to Finland, his ancestral home. Col. Lindahl is survived by his wife of nine years, Anna Elizabeth Lindahl, two daughters, Virginia Lindahl, of Alexandria, VA and Kristine Lindahl Currie, of Chapel Hill, NC and two sisters, Susan Costa, of S. Yarmouth, MA and Dorothy Guenther, also of S. Yarmouth, MA. He is pre-deceased by his sister, Margaret Servidio. Col. Lindahl leaves three grandchildren, Benjamin Lecker, Nathaniel Currie, and Noah Currie, who knew him affectionately as "Popsy".  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation to aid veterans affected by Agent Orange exposure, to the Daedalians Foundation, or to the Shenandoah National Trust Fund.  Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA. Col. Lindahl will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
