HUGHES Photo by John Lavery Gary Hughes (age 86) Died at his home in Rehoboth Beach, DE on July 6, 2016. Born in Columbia, SC, on April 6, 1930, to Gary L. Hughes and Rhoda English Hughes (later Brown) who moved to Baltimore, MD a year later, Gary attended Dundalk and Catonsville schools and graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1952. He received a BFA. After serving in the Army (1952 to 1954) Gary was Art Director for a film production company. In 1963 he founded his own animation company, Gary Hughes, Inc., in Kensington, MD. He produced award-winning animation sequences for a large variety of clients; among them top ad agencies, the National Geographic Society, Smithsonian, PBS and NBC. In 1983 Gary returned to a childhood interest in sculpture; he began creating limited bronze editions of his work. Recognized for originality, humor and quality of form, Gary Hughes'' work is found in a number of collections from coast to coast and abroad, including Rehoboth, DE Art League, San Diego Airport terminal, Coronado Island Lake, Columbia, MD Corporate Park (commissions) as well as hundreds of private and corporate collections. From 1985 to 2013 he worked in his Bethesda, Maryland studio. In 2013 he moved both residence and studio to Rehoboth, DE. Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, historian Dr. Ellen Roney Hughes of Rehoboth Beach and his sister, Jane Hughes. His indomitable spirit lives on in his beloved sons, Jeffrey Hughes (Dorothy) and Chris Hughes; an "adopted" son, Chris Adams; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services private.
