GARY WEAVER

Dr. GARY R. WEAVER, Ph.D. (Age 73)  
Who explained American culture to the world, died March 11, 2017 in Washington, D.C. His wife Marte A. Stevenson said he passed away peacefully in his sleep after a battle with lung cancer. He is survived by their daughter, Alia Weaver and his brothers, Larry and Gale Weaver. Dr. Weaver's "cultural iceberg" analogy is used all over the world to train diverse groups struggling with managing multicultural workforces, and with sending and receiving, students and personnel from all over the world. Through his innumerable workshops, lectures, and publications, Dr. Weaver illuminated the processes and creative possibilities of bringing cultures together. As a scholar and a teacher in American University's School of International Service for almost five decades, he taught hundreds of students not only to understand others, but, what he believed to be more important, to understand themselves. He co-founded one of the first Master's degree programs in International Communication, directed American University's Community Studies Program, and founded the Intercultural Management Institute. He authored Intercultural Relations: Communication, Identity and Conflict, which help shift the paradigm in understanding cultural relations. Dr. Weaver trained dozens of international government, non-government and private sector organizations, including Fulbright Scholars, the German Marshall Fund, Alfred Friendly Press Fellows, Atlas Corps Fellows, and with his co-trainer, Mr.Khan, nearly every Foreign Service officer in the U.S. Department of State. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at American University on April 29, for details: Eventbrite (eventbrite.com).
