GEORGE HERNDON Obituary

George Jeffrey Herndon
George Jeffrey "Jeff" Herndon of Arlington, Virginia, passed away at Northern Virginia Community Hospital on October 10, 2020.  Born on January 8, 1964 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, Jeff lived most of his life in Northern Virginia. An excellent student, he graduated from the University of Virginia in 1986 with a chemistry major. While there he was elected president of his fraternity. After graduation he worked for a private sector chemical company and in 1991 was hired by the Environmental Protection Agency and remained there until his recent illness. He was the Deputy Director of the Field and External Affairs Division at EPA.  In addition to his full-time work Jeff was, among other things: A builder and master carpenter who constructed the home he lived in; a passionate gardener producing high yielding and extremely tasty fruits and vegetables; an expert in growing exotic flowers; a first-class cook; and an ardent Washington Capitals fan with a sizable memorabilia collection. His talents and interests were innumerable. Jeff leaves his wife, Radka, a son, Dominik and a daughter, Veronika. His father, Paul H Herndon III, lives in McLean, VA; his brother, Paul H Herndon IV, lives in Arlington, VA; and his sister, Heather Herndon, lives in Redondo Beach, CA. A memorial for Jeff is being planned for his home.

We were really similar together our favorite color was purple and we love sports especially hockey and our favorite team in hockey was the capitals. My favorite player was Ovechkin . I worked at EPA and met Jeff, who helped me to search records of residue chemistry. On another day at the office, Jeff appeared with what was called a "printout." It was early days of the internet and Jeff had found jokes on a website. I remember him reading from the page, everyone laughing - including Jeff - and him so enthusiastic, saying, "These are classic!" Thanks, Jeff. And thanks for the cherry stout.

I will really miss Jeff... he always had a smile on his face and a positive thing to say. The hallways at work will be much dimmer without his presence.

Jeff and I became friends when we worked together in the late 90s and early aughts. We bonded over hockey and baseball. Eventually Jeff and I decided to go all in and purchase season tickets for the CAPS. Jeff and I enjoyed discussing hockey, and loved attending CAPS games. When we head into the DC for games we always listened to the Grateful Dead, constantly debating the best era (Jeff preferred the Pig Pen era). Sharing the Stanley Cup run made us both so happy. I think that during our friendship, Jeff and I attended close to 500 regular season games together. During the summer months we would attend Nats games to get us through the summer and back to hockey season. Jeff fast became one of my closest friends. He taught me how to be kinder, more thoughtful, and better suited to weathering the ups and downs of life. I will always feel lucky to have had the time with Jeff that I did. I am a better man for having Jeff as a friend. His kindness and words of wisdom will always be a part of me. Rest in Peace dearest friend!
