Ghebre Mehreteab Obituary
Ghebre Selassie Mehreteab, a visionary leader in affordable housing and a devoted advocate for community development passed away on August 7, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born June 29, 1949 in Eritrea, "Gabe" immigrated to the United States and served as a program officer at the Ford Foundation, leading community and economic revitalization efforts. He later co-founded The NHP Foundation (NHPF), a nonprofit providing affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families. As CEO for two decades, he grew NHPF into a national force. NHPF has since provided 25,000 housing units across 100 properties in 17 states.
Ghebre Selassie Mehreteab's legacy lives on in the families with homes because of his vision, the communities transformed by his leadership, and the vast web of friends and family he nurtured.

So sorry to learn of such a devasting loss. Gabe was a mentor, friend and beloved colleague. He was able to bring so many people together around an initiative or project, and he did so with such joy, humor, and intellect. A rare combination of wit and insight. All who worked with him, for him or alongside him, were the real beneficiaries of his many gifts. Rest in peace friend.

Dear Family & Friends; Was Gabe a Friend or a Co-worker? What a choice! I knew Gabe in his early days in America. I was working as the Delaware County (PA) Director of a United Way agency and needed to hire a self-starter type person to operate an office in Chester, PA. My memory has it that my colleague, Ken Hatcher, urged me to hire Gabe....Ken and I were both returned Peace Corps Volunteers - Ken (Ethiopia; me Honduras. Ken was instrumental in getting Gabe to America and introducing him to Harris Wofford when they were both in Ethiopia. Both men recognized this amazing young man. Gabe came to see me and I hired him immediately....the rest is history.....glad to have known you dear friend,,,,Jack

Gabe was a remarkable and generous person, always kind to me in ways I will never forget. His humor could lift even the heaviest heart, and his laughter was truly contagious. I feel blessed to have known him, and my heart aches knowing he is gone. He will be dearly missed, but his kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit will live on in my memories forever. My deepest sympathy to the Mehreteab family during this difficult time.

My husband and I were fortunate to be in Gabe's company on a number of occasions through our grandchildren's association with Claire and Jack. Warm and welcoming; a kind and generous soul. What a role model. The WORLD will miss this unique man. Condolences to the Mehreteab and Redfern families.
