EVANS Gordon E. Evans LTC, U.S. Army (Ret.) Passed away on October 12, 2018 with members of his family and close friends at his side. He was a Vietnam veteran and long serving member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Gordon was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 19, 1942. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Patricia Z. Evans; his daughter, Samantha Evans Skrab (Michael); his beloved grandchildren, Evan, Jake, and Sydney; and his son, Gordon E. Evans II (Erika), his sister, Deborah and her two sons and their families, and his brother's daughters, Elizabeth and Amanda and their families. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Courtney Evans; his mother Elizabeth Evans; his father, Oral B. Evans CPT U.S. Army (Ret.); and his brother, Oral B. Evans Jr. He joined the Army in July 1962 and was commissioned as a Field Artillery officer in March 1966. His military career spanned over 29 years of active service. His assignments included postings to Europe, Viet Nam, and Korea. He was also assigned to Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Sill, OK, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, Fort Meade, MD and his final assignment was with the Army Intelligence and Security Command. He was a graduate of the Field Artillery Advance Course, Fort Sill, OK and the Command and General College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. Upon his retirement from active duty in March 1992, Gordon became a consultant to numerous Department of Defense organizations to include the Missile Defense Agency until retiring again in 2017. During his Army career, Gordon earned the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, 3rd Oak Life Cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/V device, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Citation and Parachutist Badge. In retirement, Gordon became an avid sailor and enjoyed spending time on his sailboat, The Sure Thing. He was happy to watch his grandsons at sailing camp and playing tennis. He also enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter Sydney as they learned the different species of birds that flocked to the numerous birdfeeders in his yard. Gordon and his wife Patty were frequent travelers and enjoyed visiting numerous countries during their travels. He enjoyed having friends to dinner and was eager to share those pictures on Facebook. Gordon was known to help those in need and for his steadfastness and loyalty to those who were lucky enough to have him as a friend. A wake will be this Friday, October 19 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Gordon will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors; the schedule for services and interment will be announced at a future date.
