To all of those who cared for my mother in her last years, please accept my very deepest, heartfelt thanks.

As a Buddhist, I understand that life is eternal. Buddhism is the religion of eternal life (rather then eternal death) and, therefore, I have the utmost confidence that Mom will be reborn very soon! I pray, daily, that her time in Ku is negligible and that she be reborn into a happy, loving family.

Nichiren Daishonin wrote in a Gosho called Letter to Niike:

“Stop and ponder! How rare is the faith that moves one to give alms to a priest who knows the heart of the Lotus Sutra! S/he will not stray into the evil paths if s/he does so even once. Still greater are the benefits arising from ten or twenty contributions, or from five years, ten years, or a lifetime of contributions.”

My mother gave me life; therefore, her benefit is beyond measure.

Nichiren went on to say (in the same Gosho):

“How swiftly the days pass! It makes us realize how short are the years we have left. Friends enjoy the cherry blossoms together on spring mornings and then they are gone, carried away like the blossoms by the winds of impermanence, leaving nothing but their names. Although the blossoms have scattered, the cherry trees will bloom again with the coming of spring, but when will those people be reborn? The companions with whom we composed poems praising the moon on autumn evenings have vanished with the moon behind the shifting clouds. Only their mute images remain in our hearts. The moon has set behind the western mountains, yet we shall compose poetry under it again next autumn. But where are our companions who have passed away? Even when the approaching Tiger of Death roars, we do not hear. How many more days are left to the sheep bound for slaughter?”

My Mother will always remain in my heart! Mom was a friend of mine and I have missed her. My greatest hope is to aid her in her eternal life by my unwavering dedication to the practice of the Lotus sutra, chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.

With love and respect,

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.

Dear Uncle Fred and the whole D'Ascoli clan,

I was so sad when my dad called me to tell me that Aunt Grace had passed. I have wonderful memories of summers in Ocean City spending time with your family! One of my favorite memories was when Aunt Grace took us kids to pick blueberries! Gerry had decided not to wear shoes and ended up with purple feet! Aunt Grace was a special woman who made everyone feel welcome in her home! I know she will be greatly missed. But her spirit and love will always be with all of us who loved her! God bless all of you.
