1923 - 2022

HOLLAND Griffin B. Holland (Age 98) Of Chevy Chase, MD passed away of natural causes on March 29, 2022, at his home in Chevy Chase, MD with his family by his side. Born at Sibley Hospital on April 4, 1923, to the late T. Stanley and Anna B. Holland, he was a 3rd generation Washingtonian, having never lived outside the DC area, except for college and serving in the military. Griff, as he was known, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and flew 91 combat missions in the China-Burma-India Theater, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and three air medals. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1940-1942 before being called to active duty. He returned to finish his degree in 1947. He attended George Washington University Law School at night for two years prior to being recalled to active duty during the Korean War as a member of the D.C. Air National Guard, White House Squadron. He served as squadron commander until being de-activated in 1955. In 1956 Griff co-founded District-Maryland Realty, Inc., a residential real estate company, with Walter M. Johnson, Jr. He was active in the Montgomery County and D.C. Association of Realtors serving on their Boards of Directors and numerous committees. In 2005, District Maryland was acquired by the W.C. & A.N. Miller Co. Mr. Holland was a member of the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, MD serving on the Parish Council and coaching numerous Catholic Youth Organization baseball and football teams. He was a 2nd generation member of the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD and he loved participating in and watching sports, including tennis, skiing, and especially golf. Griff also had a special affinity with animals. His family always had dogs, cats and a few trained squirrels to feed. He also raised rabbits, ducks and chickens in his backyard as a youngster. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mable Morgan Holland, his daughter Susannah Paige Holland, his two sons Griffin Bryan Holland Jr. (Diane), and Richard Waters Holland (Peggy). He has three adoring grandchildren, Patrick Offutt Holland, Delaney Robbins Holland and Elizabeth Mays Holland. A Mass of Christian Burial is to be conducted at the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, MD on Friday, April 8 at 10 a.m., with a private burial afterwards at St. Gabriel's Cemetery in Potomac, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Ann's Center for Children, Youth & Families, 4901 Eastern Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20782, in memory of Griffin B. Holland and his mother Anna B. Holland.
