I have periodically searched for Guy over the years on the internet to see how he was doing and saddened to read of this. We served together in MAG-39. I was an AH-1 flight leader and we were tasked with being part of the recovery effort the night he and Cliff Acree were shot down. It was determined they had been captured so we were directed to shut down our aircraft prior to launch. A year and a half or so later, I was living in the Del Mar BOQ having moved my family to our next duty station and in advance of my move. I was in the O Club the night Guy was given his retirement send off from VMO-1. The party broke up early and he and I spent the next several hours together and remember alternating between beer and tequila shots. He was a 100% Marine who served with great honor and was a highly respected and beloved figure. He was also a gentle soul and as we parted ways that evening I remember then and I remember today that I wish I had known him better. Thank you for your dedication Great White, you were an outstanding Marine and an even better person. Semper Fi. Prayers for the repose of his eternal soul and for the comfort of his fine family.

My deepest sympathies to the family, you don´t know me but I have always thought about Mr. Hunter throughout the past 20+ yrs.. I remember seeing his face on my TV for the first time as I watch the Dessert Storm war. I prayed everyday him and all the soldiers that were there fighting for our freedom. But he is the one that stuck in my mind for so many years. I just want to say thank you for everything you did for our Country. I wish I could have told him personally. God Bless you, and again I´m very sorry for your loss

I am so sorry to hear about the loss for your family. My father, Steven D Daniels, also served in the USMC during vietnam but never went overseas due to medical. We found in my fathers possessions a bracket with the following ID CWO Guy L Hunter USMC. Could they have crossed paths. Would love to connect and return bracelet if you think it´s his. My father lived in Seattle, lived in Long Beach for a short time, and then lived his life in Alaska and retired to Vegas. [email protected]

Gunner Hunter was certainly one of a kind! I first met him in 1980 in Yuma, AZ. Had the privilege of serving with him at VMO-2 off and on throughout my career. He inspired everyone he served with in a very special way during his legendary career as a U. S. Marine. Please accept my very deepest condolences. He has left us far too soon.
