Hamilton Beggs Obituary
Hamilton Scott Beggs, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born on December 18, 1936, in Knoxville, Tennessee, he was the son of Donald E. Beggs of Birmingham, Alabama, and Gene F. Sparks of Selma, Alabama. Ham spent the first years of his life in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and at the age of seven, moved with his family to Alexandria, Virginia, the city he called home for the rest of his life. Soon after arriving, he joined Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he remained a devoted lifelong parishioner.
Hamilton graduated from Staunton Military Academy, where he was a star hurdler on the track team. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Yellowstone before going on to attend The George Washington University, earning his degree and proudly joining the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
In 1970, Ham married Lola Mitchell of Wilmington, Delaware, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage and raised their two sons, John and Stephen.
Ham enjoyed a long and successful career as a nationally recognized brick and architectural salesman. A member of the Army Navy Country Club for decades, he loved playing golf and spending time with friends. He also loved to travel and found particular joy in his time spent at Shrine Mont over the years. He had a quick wit, knew his way around a grill, enjoyed a good martini, sang beautifully, and loved spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his older brother, Donald E. Beggs Jr.
Ham is survived by his sons, John and Steve (Martha) Beggs; his former wife, Lola Mitchell Beggs; his beloved grandchildren, Michael, Isabel, Rosie, and Annie Beggs; and a large extended family. He was loved and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Goodwin House Alexandria, 4800 Fillmore Ave, Alexandria, VA 22311, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church or Shrine Mont, in Orkney Springs, VA.
