I met the then LTC Hazel Johnson when we were both assigned to the Office of the Surgeon General. She was someone who set and maintained high standards. At the same time she was kind, generous and very helpful. Our paths crossed a few times after we both went on to different assignments and she later became General Hazel Johnson-Brown, Chief of the Army Nurse Corp. She was universally admired by family, friends, colleagues and fellow professionals. Thanks to Hazel for blazing the path and for her many contributions. She will surely be missed. My sympathy and deepest condolescences to the family of General (Dr) Hazel Johnson-Brown.

I was Hazel Johnson's Adjutant at the very beginning of her term as the Dean Of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing. She was unique, in that she was able to focus on leadership, academics and patient care - all at the same time - and do all with the highest of standards. I have not had contact with her since I departed Walter Reed but am very sadddend to learn of her passing. She was a great lady and will be missed.

As young Army nurses in the late 1960's, we met then Major Johnson when she was course director for the basic OR nurses program at Letterman. She set high standards and expected us to meet them, yet gave us her encouragement and friendship. We saw her later in her career and she remained a friend and a woman we admired very much. She will be missed.

It is with great sadness, pride and pure love that the Sister Soldiers of the National Association of Black Military Women extend their condolences to the family of General (DR) Hazel W. Johnson-Brown. We who have served and are serving will always give honor to her for paving the way for us to serve and strive "TO BE ALL WE COULD/CAN BE". She set the standard of being the first African American Female General Officer. She made it so that we would think further than we would ever think to go. The National Association of Black Military Women Moto is "TO TELL HERSTORY" and we most certainly will always tell General Johnson-Brown's story. General Johnson-Brown - Mam - "WE STAND ON YOUR SHOULDERS-- WE COULD NOT HAVE -- WOULD NOT HAVE -- MADE IT WITHOUT YOU". You have been called home. Job Well Done. Your Sister Soldiers

I will remember Dr. Hazel W. Johnson-Brown. I met her when I worked with the American Nurses Association. Dr. Brown was dedicated, thoughtful and kind. At the time, I did not know she was a soror but mentioned it to her later. Her work and legacy at ANA will be remembered.
