Henry Vernon Nickel, environmental lawyer in the Washington, DC office of Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, died of cancer in his home on March 20, 2025 at age 81.
Born in Chicago in 1943, Henry moved to Maryland as a teenager and later graduated from the University of Virginia in 1965. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree at the George Washington University Law School in 1968, where he served on the Editorial Board of the George Washington Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Following law school, Henry entered into an over 50-year career in environmental law.
Henry's career took off when he joined the law firm of Hunton Andrews Kurth (then Hunton and Williams) in June 1976. He represented electric generating companies and other companies before the Environmental Protection Agency during rulemaking proceedings and in numerous judicial proceedings. Henry was admitted to every federal appellate court and the Supreme Court.
Over the years, Henry was recognized for his work by numerous organizations, such as The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, Washington, DC Super Lawyers, Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America and Law 360. Colleagues complimented his ability to make complex statutes or regulations understandable, aided by his encyclopedic memory of administrative and legal cases. The firm decided to name its environmental and energy blog after him, "The Nickel Report."
Henry loved the practice of law, but equally loved traveling the world, eating wonderful meals and enjoying a drink and sharing stories with his family and friends.
Henry met his wife Carol while they were law students at George Washington University. They were married in 1968 until her death in 2006. He is survived by his sons Bob, David and Edward, his grandchildren Conner, Jack, Tyler, Sophie, Bryce and Henry Cole, his sister Sharon Covington, his brother Robert Nickel and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Henry at Congressional Country Club on Saturday, March 29th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Carol K. Nickel Scholarship Endowment at William and Mary Law School at
