Dr. Hercharan Kaur Sethi

Dr. Hercharan Kaur Sethi, also fondly known by many as Sharon, passed away on July 5, 2023. She was born on October 22, 1944, in the beautiful city of Shimla, India.

After graduating from medical school in Patiala, she practiced medicine in the Indian Army. Upon marrying her husband, Kulwant Sethi, she immigrated to the United States, where she continued to serve others through her work in medicine while raising a family.

Once settled in Virginia, Hercharan established a thriving OB/GYN practice, which she led for over 20 years. She was a beloved figure in the community and among her peers, helping to bring thousands of new lives into the world and providing compassionate care to countless patients throughout her career. Even in retirement, Hercharan continued to provide care, serving as a patient advocate.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Hercharan was a devoted wife to her late husband, Kulwant, and a loving mother to their children, Justin, Dev, and Raj, and her grandchildren, Conner and Ajay.

Hercharan was also a voracious reader, finding joy and solace in the pages of countless books. Her thirst for knowledge was never quenched, and her lifelong love of learning was a testament to her innate curiosity and intellectual prowess.

A beloved mother, sister, and aunt; a revered doctor; a tireless servant of her community — Hercharan's life was marked by an unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others. Her loss is felt deeply by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. She will be remembered and missed dearly.

Religious services will commence Thursday, July 13, with an Akhand Path at Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Fairfax, VA, followed by a Bhog on Saturday at 11 a.m. In the meantime, the family asks that any tributes in Hercharan's memory be made to Singh Sabha Gurdwara (https://ssgva.org/daswandh/).

I was so shocked when I heard Dr. Sethi had passed. She was a kind and showed empathy to her patients, including myself. She was the only gynecologist I had seen, since moving here from California in 1999. I was referred to her through one of my co-workers, and loved telling others about her service. She took care of my daughter's surgery and once the surgery was over she held me in her arms assuring me all was well. When I found out I had cancer in 2018, she held me in her arms and told me not to worry, that all was well and we caught it early. I lost my insurance during pre-covid and had to drop her coverage. I was calling her today to re-establish my service and found out she was gone. Tears filled my eyes and my heart was overwhelmed with sorrow. She was the best, and I will never forget her. I thank God for doctors like her. My prayers and condolences, and love to her family.

I just learned of Dr. Sethi's passing and I have tears in my eyes. This woman was the first one to hold my children, and we shared grief when I lost a child the same week as her husband passed. I have no words for the many ways this woman made me feel loved and cared for. Her legacy is profound and I will always remember her with love and appreciation.

Dr. Sethi had been my doctor since 1998 when I was 21. She saw me through 3 births, losses of family members, and a few health scares. She was the most empathetic person I have ever known and whenever I left the office we hugged. I was so grateful she came out of retirement to deliver my daughter in 2012. She was the only person I wanted to deliver her. She took care of me and my health for over 20 years and she was someone I trusted deeply.
The last time I saw her was pre-Covid in December 2019. I remember that visit, her smile, and the last hug. We ended with, "I'll see you again soon".
I just learned of her passing today and I am deeply saddened. I wish I had know sooner so I could pay my respects to her family. I will always hold her memory close to my heart. I'm so grateful to have known her.

One of a Kind. A very kind and determined person, Hercharan came into the family when she married my first cousin and close buddy Kulwant.

We admired Hercharan's perseverance in pursuing her medical studies in New York City and in achieving a big success in her field and in serving her patients.

Hercharan had a penchant for acquiring discerning pieces of art and decor for her house.

We have a fond memory of her recent brief visit with us in Mississauga, Ontario and having a simple lunch of paraunthis and omelette. How little things like that do mean a lot in our sentiments.

Hercharan and Kulwant: "Your sons, Justin, Raj and Dev will be carrying the sentimental legacy of the Sethi family tree".

Our sincere condolences to them and the family.

My dear Raj, Dev and Justin,
Your may not remember me. I recently met your remarkable mother at the family gathering of the death anniversary of Bhai Sahib S Mohinder Jee, at the Sterling Gurudwara. We sat next to one another during the kirtan and path ceremony and recited prayers together. She was very much her lively and upbeat self, as always. Her sudden death came as a shock and aggrieved me greatly. How much worse must it be for you to accept her passing. I wish I were with you in person, at this sad time. Accept my heartfelt condolences.
Much love,
Pammy Aunty

I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Sethi's passing. I was a patient of hers for many years after being referred by close friends. Our appointments were never rushed. She was thoughtful and interested and gave excellent advice. It is because of her advice that I started an exercise program that ended back pain I´d been having for a year. She is the doctor I brought my daughters to when they were older. Her love and pride in her three boys was very evident and I send them and their families my deepest sympathies.

Dr. Sethi was a wonderful physician to me and I considered her a friend. She guided me through many phases of health and advised me routinely on other problems. My favorite was, “your children will never learn anything from your mistakes!” I loved her. May she rest in peace!❤❤
