HERMAN GELMAN "Hy" (Age 93)  
Of Crofton, MD died of natural causes on November 1, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Dale Gelman, his children Michael (Susie), Jay (Jill), and Jana Gelman, and his grandchildren Asher (Mati) Gelman, Sarah (Dan) Reuven, Rachel, Cora, and Remy. Services will be held on Wednesday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Solel at 2901 Mitchellville Rd., Bowie, MD 20716. Shiva services will be held on November 5, 6, and 8 at 7:30 p.m. at 1718 Tipton Dr., Crofton, MD 21114. A memorial website for Hy has been established at http://www.forevermissed.com/herman-gelman.Hy was born on June 17, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY to Jacob and Yetta Gelman. He graduated from Queens College in NY in 1942 and immediately enlisted in the Navy. While at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, he married Marcelle Shacks with whom he had his first son, Michael. Hy served aboard a destroyer in World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters and attained the rank of LT. Commander. After the war, Hy returned to Annapolis where he worked as a CPA. He joined the Masons and became the Master of Amos Lodge in 1961. After his wife Marcelle passed away, Hy married Dale Berkman Odesser with whom he had two children, Jay and Jana. While living in Crofton, Hy continued his work with service organizations becoming President of the Crofton Lion's Club. From 1970 until his retirement in 1992, Hy worked at NRUCFC as head of accounting.Hy was known for his easygoing nature and glowing smile. He loved playing golf and ballroom dancing, classical music, traveling, and Maryland Terrapins basketball.In lieu of flowers, donations to Temple Solel or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation are welcome.
