Horace R. Holmes JR.

Horace R. Holmes, Jr. of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023, he was 66 years old. Born and raised in Washington, DC, close friends and family call him "Chico". Horace was a beloved and devoted Father and Husband, a talented journalist and communicator, a man of unwavering faith and strong supporter of many community organizations in DC.

Horace is survived by his spouse, Liliana Henao Holmes, children Emilio and Eliana, sister and brother-in-law Cheryl D. Holmes Miller and Phillip M. Miller, niece Gabrielle N. Miller, nephew Aaron P. Miller, father-in-law and mother-in law Jorge and Elia Henao, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Brennan and Zoraya Bajdek, brother-in law and sister-in-law Jorge and Leah Henao, nephew Wesley Henao, and cousins Tammy Holmes Lowry, Michael Holmes, Deborah Beard, Mark Sabino, Elizabeth Sabino, and Joseph Sabino. He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma S. Holmes Weston and father, Horace R. Holmes Sr.

Professionally, Horace had an illustrious career as a Broadcast Journalist. He served at WJLA TV as a co-anchor of the weekend and morning news, weekday general assignment reporter and member of the 7 On Your Side Team. Before joining WJLA, he anchored the Morning Show for WMAR-TV in Baltimore. Horace received several awards for his journalism, including seven Emmy Awards. He is a beloved friend, colleague and mentor, and touched many lives with his wisdom, guidance, empathy, sense of humor and joy for life.

Horace was an active member of Northwest Community church, where he found joy, hope and support in his faith. A Celebration of Life Service to honor Horace's life and legacy will take place at a later date.

I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of such a fine and kind young man. I remember years ago I sent him an email, l asked him a question about something I can't remember what but to my surprise he answered me. I told him I felt like I was communicating with a movie star. My heart goes out to the family. May God bless you and keep you during this difficult time.

Dear family:

We met Horace during the 2001 Anthrax Attacks and as workers, we found solace in his professional and caring demeanor as he captured and shared our stories. He covered a news story 10 Deadly Days, that helped to share the horrors that we as postal workers experienced as during that time. He also reached out to us and allowed us to contact him from time to time throughout the years to follow-up and share updates. He was one of a kind person and journalist, his imprint on our lives will always be remembered. This is saddening news, prayers to his family, may his spirit have safe travels, R.I.P. Mr. Holmes! To the Holmes family : I would like to say something very special about Horace but you and anyone who knew him already know what an outstanding individual he was in all variables in life.
I was one of the photojournalist who worked along side of Horace in the WUSA training program with Bruce Johnson and Bob Strickland. We all knew Horace would succeed In all his endeavors, his manor was always in the best thoughts for all he knew. My warmest wishes to the entire family.
