Howard Kane Obituary

KANE

Dr. HOWARD KANE

Dr. Howard Kane, of Clarksville, MD, passed away suddenly on Friday, December 3, 2021 at the age of 68. He is survived by his loving sons, Robert Kane and Samuel Kane; and sister, Linda Hofberg (Julien). He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Aimée Kane; and parents, Albert and Shirley Kane.

Dr. Kane was born in Scranton, PA, attended the University of Pittsburgh for his undergraduate studies, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, and Hahnemann (now Drexel University) College of Medicine. He was board certified in ophthalmology and specialized in glaucoma.

Dr. Kane was renowned as much for his compassion and dedication as he was for his medical expertise. He never rushed through an appointment, never failed to inquire about family, and never missed a chance to chat about sports. He saw his patients as friends who came to see him for medical care. And they adored him.

Howard was a doting father to Rob and Sam, a devoted brother-in-law to Aimee's sisters Wendy (Michael) and Marcia (Joel), and the most entertaining and loving uncle ever to David, Aaron, Alex, Joshua, and Hayley. Along with his devoted companion, Catherine, and his many relatives and friends, we loved his world-class sense of humor, his sweet nature, and the pure joy he exuded in spending time with all of us. He also was an outstanding musician, a passionate gardener, and an enthusiastic golfer. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts that is wide and deep.

Due to the pandemic, services are private. A virtual funeral service will be held Thursday, December 23, 2021, at 11 a.m., the livestreaming of the service and any virtual Shiva information will be made available on Levinson's website. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Visionary Foundation online at

Dr. Kane was my eye doctor for many years, a physician with the best possible skills and a wonderful personality. He was a deeply moral person who quietly helped others. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

I heard about Dr. Kane´s death about a month later and still can´t believe it. Knew him through my husband who is his Patient . Loved him as he never forgot to thank me for the cookies I brought for him when Mrs. Kane was sick. Miss him . I can´t imagine that I didn´t get to drop off his cookies again .

Just learned this sad news today when booking my next appointment. From the obit:

>Dr. Kane was renowned as much for his compassion and dedication as he was for his medical expertise. He never rushed through an appointment, never failed to inquire about family, and never missed a chance to chat about sports. He saw his patients as friends who came to see him for medical care. And they adored him.

I could not have said it better. He was the absolute best. I will miss him terribly as both a trusted doctor and dear soul. Condolences to his family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Kane was a wonderful doctor. He was knowledgeable and kind. Perhaps the only doctor who I trusted completely.
He often spoke of how "supportive" his sons are.
I´ll miss him.
Wishing you the best, Linda

Dr. Kane was an outstanding ophthalmologist. When he examined me and shone those very bright lights into my eyes, I knew that I could trust him! He was always willing to help people, as he did when my in-laws were here visiting from Texas and my father-in-law had an emergency eye situation. He'd go the extra mile with his sincere advice and his round up of samples! He was always in a good mood! Our community will miss his knowledge and very caring bedside manner.

We shared gardening stories and I gave him a seedling of a red maple tree from my yard. He always tried to bring a picture of that tree to share at my appointments.

Dear Rob, Sammie and Linda:

Your dad (and brother) was a very close friend of mine during our childhood years. We were pretty inseparable until the age of 14. We basically lost touch with each other in adulthood, however we were able to reconnect when I joined Facebook following my retirement 5 years ago.

The comments describing your dad do not surprise me. Even as a child, he was kind, funny and passionate about whatever interests he pursued. He must have been a fantastic doctor due to his combination of work ethic, caring personality and being a genuine "people person."

I have many fond memories of time spent with Howie during our childhoods. Some which stand out include our many sleepovers, playing sports and at my Bar Mitzvah party. It took place at my home and he was the one friend I was allowed to invite. I still have pictures of us at this party surrounded by my relatives and friends of my parents. Thank God he was there or I would have been very bored!

I only met your mom once when they attended a party my parents had for my wife and I in Clarkes Summit following our wedding in Florida. She seemed like a very sweet person and I know that she and your dad had a wonderful marriage. Losing both your parents at such young ages is very unfair, to say the least. I do know, however, that both of you were blessed with amazing parents and your fond memories of them will always remain.

P.S. If you'd like me to send you the picture of us at my Bar Mitzvah, you can send me your email address.

Thanks Robbie and Sam for reminding us how great a guy your dad was and how much influence he had on both of you. He will be sorely missed, but fortunately you both have a lot of him in you. Like other writers, I too thought HK was the funniest man I ever met. We went on 20 golf outings together and HK a always made them fun and memorable. I was his coach in Myrtle Beach, and I have to admit that I failed miserably, but we still enjoyed every shot and comment. Let´s cherish those memories now and forever. Your friend, Coach

I was under Dr. Kane´s care for over twenty years after being diagnosed with glaucoma at a very young age. I trusted him implicitly and so appreciated the time, effort, and thoughtfulness he displayed during every one of my appointments. His expertise and caring were exemplary. My thoughts are with all of his family and friends. Such a sweet and kind man.

Met Howard while working @ Shady Grove Medical Ctr. He would come to the medical staff office & chat with all of us. Especially my good friend Sheila Shalleck. Eventually, I became one of his patients. Kind, funny, empathetic & down to earth summarizes his personality.
We're sorry for your loss personally to his son's and family.
Condolences,

Howard and his family were among our very first friends when we moved to Clarksville, in 1998. A kind, caring, loving family man, of even temper and genial personality. A deep loss to the entire community.

To Rob and Sam
I am so deeply sorry for your tremendous loss. Your Dad was a wonderful guy who was my roommate on the Myrtle Beach Fall trips- partly because we were the only two who were not ADHD psychologists and both snored loudly. On October 20, 2004 he reveled with Kevin, Arthur and me at Myrtle Beach when the Red Sox beat the Yankees. He shared his losses from being a Browns and Pirates fan with us long- suffering Red Sox with us. A camaraderie of misery. He was rejuvenated by the Ravens. He was the funniest and kindest man whom I have ever known. My life has been enhanced by your father.
He spoke of both of you frequently and lovingly. He is with you always.
