JAMES DENTON Obituary

DENTON JAMES STEELE DENTON On June 18, 2018, Jim Denton, age 66, of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Since the 1980s he was a leader in supporting the growth of democratic institutions in Europe, particularly in former Soviet-bloc countries. Most recently he was the publisher and editor of the Journal World Affairs and the founder of the Transatlantic Renewal Project. He was masterful at bringing together people from a wide range of political views, nationalities, and professions to promote Western democratic traditions. He defied his illness with extraordinary courage and lighthearted humor for more than a decade, enjoying life fully and pursuing his work indefatigably into his very last days. He was devoted to his family, and he loved the arts and travel, particularly to southern France. Born on July 5, 1951 in Lakehurst, NJ, he was the son of the late RADM Jeremiah Andrew Denton, Jr. and Kathryn Jane Maury Denton. Jim is survived by his wife, CDR Marilyn Anne Grisham (US Navy, ret.); daughters, Caroline Fontaine Denton and Kathryn Denton (Kyle) Earnest; grandchildren, Emily Jane and Thomas Stearns Earnest; siblings Jeremiah Andrew Denton III (Mona), Donald Maury Denton (Mary Gregg), William Caro Denton, Madeleine Irene (Terry) Doak, Michael Clarke (Katherine) Denton, and Mary Denton Lewis (Michael Hutton), his dear friend Holly Vandergrift and many beloved nieces and nephews. Gifts in memory of Jim can be made to the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) at: 1225 19th Street NW, Ste 450, Washington, D.C. 20036, to support the continuation of his last and most important project, the Transatlantic Fellowship Program. The program has been renamed by CEPA in his honor "The James Denton Transatlantic Fellowship Program." Gifts may also be directed to support Dr. Channing Paller's prostate cancer research at the Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation. Make a gift online at sibleyfoundation.org or send checks (with a memo indicating the gift is in memory of James Denton to support Dr. Paller's research) to the Sibley Foundation, 5255 Loughboro Rd. NW, Washington, DC. 20016. Services will be held on Monday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m at St. Joseph's on Capitol Hill, Second and C Streets Northeast, Washington, DC. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Please view and sign the family's online guest book at: www.DeVolFuneralHome.com www.DeVolFuneralHome.com

I was at the Denton home on several occasions when the Denton Family lived at Naval Operations Base on Brick Row. I didnt served with James as I was one of his Fathers drivers while awaiting my orders to go TDY to YN A school. LT Fischer was his aide. Love and respected your Mother and Father dearly. The ADM signed an 8x10 for my maternal grandmothers for her 83rd BD that picture was the topic of many quilting gatherings! Sailor - your home now with the eternal Father.... Fair winds and following seas!
