JAMES HINEY

James Walter Hiney, Jr. , Esq. "Jim"  
On Saturday, December 29,2021. Born November 12, 1937 in Boston, he lived in the Oakdale section of Dedham, MA adjacent to Readville train yards of the New Haven Railroad. Jim graduated from Tufts University with. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and, while at Tufts, was the president of the local Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After college Jim joined the Army and then graduated from American University Law School in 1960.  He initially took a position with the Boeing Company in Seattle before joining a DC law firm which became Fidelman, Wolffe, Leitner and Hiney and represented companies seeking patent protection across a wide range of technologies. He became heavily involved in the Gasohol industry after moving to the firm of Qualley, Larson and Jones and represented companies in midwestern states becoming an expert on alcohol fuels, especially ethanol.  Jim took a position with a NASDAQ company, NCT, as Vice President General Counsel where he was involved in IP and the SEC as well as court matters. He travelled to Europe and Japan in this position reviewing licensing and royalty arrangements for use of NCT technology. He was also involved in petitioning the UK to create a Supreme Court in that period as England had only a High Court. Additionally, Jim became a registered lobbyist during his time with NCT.  Jim left the company to establish his own law firm with offices in Northern Virginia, Charlottesville, and Blacksburg representing inventors and students. As a result of this endeavor he became CEO of Veterinary Technologies Corporation in Virginia.  Jim had many interests including traveling (especially road trips), model trains, history, classic cars, and books. He loved sailing and was heavily involved with the tall ship sailing community.  He leaves his wife Martha, four living children and nine grandchildren. Visitation on Sunday, January 2, 2022 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Pierce Funeral Home. Services and interment in Massachusetts.
