Jim was always an engaging and interesting friend, among a group of treasured friends in
our "graduate days." He was one of the "merriest" of spirits in that dear, Claremont group of pals. He & my late husband
shared many a funny "Caper," and not only while they were rooming together (with two other grad students) at the Sycamore House, but also during a number of terrific, sun-soaked summers at the beaches of CA´s Santa Monica. (Anne´s family home was then there.). I know that my late husband, Howie, joins me in
mourning our well-loved friend
Jim! In the many years that
followed, while we did not get
to see Jim and Anne as often as we would have liked, Jim
was a steadfast and thoughtful
correspondent. Our deepest
compassion-for Anne and Mary, and all of Jim´s family and friends.

Jim was a colleague at USTR and a friend outside the office. I always enjoyed our conversations over lunch, and appreciated the banter. He´ll be missed.

Condolences to Ann, Mary, Steve and all his relatives and friends who loved this fine fellow. He helped me as USTR as I led the Cray subsidiary in Japan selling supercomputers to the Japanese. I was delighted to hear that he was a fellow Eph-man, (Williams graduate), and knew we were in good hands. I wish I'd known him better but, like Jim, I've popped around the world a lot and wasn't in DC very much. Glad I never had to argue with him cause I surely would have lost. And that without ever losing my affection and respect for him.
Best to his survivors from Pock Otis, also born in 1942, and living in the flyover zone of St. Paul, Minnesota, where I began this wonderful holiday on Earth.

Thanks so much for sending the obituary; I never got to see Jim often enough. Never knew he loved the AT. Hiked the southern half myself. It is truly beautiful. Hope to see you soon. Love, Mary Lou
