James Vincent Stanton Congressman

Died peacefully on May 2, 2022 at the age of 90. James was the second youngest of six children born to the late Martin Joseph and Loretta Mary Stanton (née McFadden). He was born on February 27, 1932, in Cleveland, OH and attended school at Holy Name High School (1949), the University of Dayton (1958), and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (1961).

James served his country for more than 20 years in both the military and as an elected official serving the people of Cleveland, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War. His career as an elected official began in 1959 as a member of the Cleveland City Council where he served from 1959 to 1970 and served as president from 1964 to 1970. James was then elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1970 for the 92nd Congress and served until 1977.

After his political career, James practiced law in Washington, D.C. from 1977 to 1981. In 1981, he joined the Delaware North Companies in Buffalo, New York where he served as executive vice president until 1988. From 1988 until his retirement, James resumed his legal practice and continued his support of political candidates in local, state, and national elections.

More than anything, James's love and attention in life was centered on his family and friends. James was a loving and caring husband to Peggy and the two were happily married for more than 61 years until her passing in December 2021. James was an incredibly devoted father and grandfather to his four children and sixteen grandchildren who he adored.

James was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Margaret M. "Peggy" Stanton (née Casserly), his parents, his son Joseph M. "Joey" Stanton, his sisters Dorothy and Mary Loretta, and his brothers Michael, Joseph (Brother Nivard, OCSO) and Thomas. He is survived by his children, Richard P. (Clara) Stanton, Bridget (Christopher) Stanton Rascher, Michael J. (Brooke) Stanton; and his grandchildren, John "Jack" J. Stanton, Patrick C. Stanton, Sean M. Stanton, James C. "JC" Stanton, Michael (Beth) Stanton, Alexandra "Alex" Stanton (Federico Locatelli), Jacquelyn "Jackie" Stanton, Nicholas "Nicky" Stanton, Caitlyn Rascher, Joseph Rascher, Elizabeth "Ellie" Rascher, Christopher Rascher, James V. Stanton II, Victoria "Tori" A. Stanton, Casserly B. Stanton, and John "Johnny" M. Stanton.
