JEFFREY WOLFE Obituary

WOLFE JEFFREY JOHN WOLFE Jeffrey John Wolfe, 71, died Saturday, October 20, 2018, at the INOVA Fairfax Cardiac Intensive Care Unit surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 11, 1947, in Oakland, CA to Virgil J. and Inez Gallagher "Kitty" Wolfe. Jeff graduated from the University of Virginia in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. After working for the General Services Administration for several years, he took the trip of a lifetime, traveling for nine months across Africa in a Land Rover, learning about and enjoying the varied customs of each of the many countries he visited. Upon his return, he started a business importing and selling African art. After reentering government service in 1982, Jeff earned his Master of Science degree in Systems Analysis from George Mason University. In 2013, he retired from the Commerce Department's Office of Patent and Trademark as the Director of the Enterprise Architecture Division. An avid athlete, Jeff played football at Gonzaga College High School and the University of Virginia and, later, rugby for the George Washington club team. He organized the renowned softball team, The Wolves, originally a group of boyhood friends. Other sports-related pursuits he enjoyed included Alpine skiing, running 10ks, golfing, and coaching his two sons' youth soccer teams. When his boys were young, Jeff built them a tree house. Using his honed carpentry skills, he tackled many other renovation projects around their home. Among the most dramatic were the relocation of an expansive exterior door in the lower level, creating a more usable family space, and the remodeling of two bathrooms, one windowless. There he constructed a skylight-topped window-well, bringing much-needed sunlight to a dark space. In 2009, Jeff was diagnosed with an extremely rare autoimmune blood disease, Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH). Even so, he never let it define him as he continued to work, travel, exercise and keep an active social life. He was determined not just to live, but to have a life worth living. At that, he succeeded admirably. Jeff was a loving husband, devoted father, supportive brother, doting uncle and loyal friend. In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Richard Wolfe. Jeff is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cynthia Morgan Wolfe; two sons, Patrick Joseph Wolfe of Alexandria, VA, and John Blakely Wolfe of New Haven, CT; two brothers, Michael (Phyllis) and Terance (Carrie); sister-in-law Kay; five nephews, three nieces, and six grand-nieces and -nephews. Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 29, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, VA, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 30, interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the PNH Research & Support Foundation, www.aamds.org. My prayers are with all of you. I have such fond memories of visiting the Wolfe gang when I was young. Jeff and his brothers were so tall and full of fun. I was 6 at the time. Unfortunately the distance kept us apart back then . But I always thought so fondly of Jeff and the gang.
