Jerome Feit Obituary

Jerome Feit, 93, of Gaithersburg, MD, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2024.
Jerry was born in Brooklyn, NY to Abe and Bessie Feit on March 26, 1930. He graduated from Brooklyn's Jefferson High School in 1947, New York University in 1951, and NYU Law School in 1954. That fall, on Labor Day, he married Rosalind (Roz) Zivotofsky in Brooklyn; the pair met just a few years earlier hanging around Malta St. in East New York, the Brooklyn neighborhood where they both grew up playing kick the can, going to Coney Island, drinking New York Egg Creams with Fox's U-Bet chocolate syrup, and where Jerry spent a little too much time at the pool hall.
Dedicating his entire career to public service, Jerry worked as a lawyer for 43 years, first at the New York City Rent Control Commission, then, after moving to Washington, DC in 1956, at the Department of Justice, where he was an Assistant to the Solicitor General and Deputy Chief of the Appellate Section of the Criminal Division. While he was a young attorney at the DOJ in the late 1950s, barrier-breaking attorney Beatrice Rosenberg took Jerry under her wing, mentoring him and assigning him to several important Supreme Court cases, including Dege (1960) and Pope (1968). He concluded his career as Deputy General Solicitor and Solicitor at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. During his illustrious career, he argued in the U.S. Supreme Court 13 times. In 1983, he won the Justice Tom C. Clark Award for Outstanding Government Lawyer. By then, he was a mentor to young government attorneys himself.
Jerry was an avid reader and had a charming if acerbic wit. As a nonagenarian, he alarmed young lifeguards as a surprisingly active swimmer.
A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, known for his illicit neighborhood firework shows, he lived most of his life in Montgomery County, MD, settling in Rockville, Bethesda, and, for the last year of his life, in Gaithersburg, MD.
Jerry is preceded in death by his older brothers, Charles and George, and by his older sister Bonji.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rosalind; his sons Adam and Josh; his daughter-in-law Krista; and his grandchildren Cory and Natalie.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on March 15 at Garden of Remembrance, 14321 Comus Rd., Clarksburg, MD 20871. Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzasky Goldberg Funeral Care.

I worked with Jerry in the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Solicitor's Office where he was not only my supervisor, but more importantly, a gracious mentor and a friend. Yes, he could raise his voice. But I never heard that voice--which was often raised in my direction--raised in anger. Rather, it was his wonderful enthusiasms that gave volume to his words. We would occasionally travel together to various federal courts of appeal and he was a great traveling companion. One of my highest honors was to "second chair" Jerry at the U.S. Supreme Court; sitting next to him as he argued one of our FERC cases that I had lost below and, as you might expect, that he won before the Court. He was a great lawyer, a great friend, a great teacher and a great human being.

I had the pleasure of working for Jerry Feit in the FERC solicitor's office. Apart from his obvious intellect and experience, I remember Jerry as kind, supportive, and of course witty. Wit is a special gift, and his softened the trying days. Thank you, Jerry, for all you taught us.
