JEROME GRANRUD Obituary
Jerome H. Granrud
In memory of Jerome H. "Jerry" Granrud, retired US Army lieutenant general, who passed away on March 18, 2020. Born in Minot, ND, in 1937, LTG Granrud graduated Army ROTC from University of Missouri in 1960 and was commissioned an air defense artillery/field artillery officer. During his 34-year active duty career, he served two tours in Vietnam, was an Army force developer and held a variety of staff and command positions culminating as the Commanding General, US Army Japan and IX Corps. An avid golfer and music lover, he is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth "Cookie"; son, Erik and daughter-in-law, Karyn; daughter, Britta; and granddaughter, Sonja Granrud. Funeral is 11 a.m., June 23, 2021, Arlington National Cemetery. Donations to the Army Historical Foundation or the charity of your choice can be made in lieu of flowers.

I arrived at Herzo Base in September 1981 as a young buck private, eager to serve my country but lacking a real father figure in my life. By some stroke of luck, I was asked to be the driver for the Brigade/Post Commander, then Colonel Jerome Granrud. Little did I know that this would be the most formative 18 months of my life, as I absorbed his wisdom, military bearing, and leadership style with admiration for this great Army leader.
Looking back, I have only one true regret: when he asked me if I wanted to attend West Point Preparatory School for a year, and then go on to four years at West Point. I respectfully declined, not fully appreciating the opportunity that was presented to me. But Colonel Granrud's influence on my life has been immeasurable, and I owe much of my success as a future law enforcement leader and Chief of Police to the lessons in life that I learned from him.
It was the honor of a lifetime to serve under Colonel Granrud, and I will always be grateful for his guidance and mentorship. Until we meet again, sir...

My deepest condolences to the Granrud family. I worked for the then MG Granrud when he was stationed at the Pentagon. I will always remember him with fond memories. My husband also worked with him doing international work. My you rest in eternal peace, Sir!!
