JERRY NELSON Obituary

Jerry Nelson
On August 26, 2021, Jerry Nelson of Brookeville, MD., husband of Anita (Konick) Nelson for 39 loving years; devoted father of Benjamin Nelson (Jacky Hess) of Berlin, Germany, and Rei Nelson of Philadelphia, PA; beloved son of Marilyn (Yates) Nelson and Richard Nelson of Silver Spring, MD (both deceased); dear brother of David Nelson (Diane Nelson) of Mamaroneck, NY; and devoted son-in-law to Anita's parents (Rosette and Bernard Konick) and their extended family. Born in Illinois, Jerry spent his early years in Peoria Heights and had fond memories of those times, especially living next door to his maternal grandparents, Guy and Maude Yates and his uncle Dick Yates. Jerry's family moved to Silver Spring, MD in 1967, and he remained in the suburban Maryland area for the remainder of his life. Jerry's initial career was as a cabinetmaker. He apprenticed to a master craftsman in Massachusetts and his work appeared in Fine Woodworking magazine. In later years, he moved into the IT field, retiring in 2019. Always busy with new hobbies and passions, Jerry spent his free time collecting music, rock climbing, boat building, sewing elaborate costumes for the kids, cycling, brewing beer, making cheese, and perfecting pizzas from scratch. Jerry was an avid Francophile and he and Anita loved traveling together. His enthusiasm for life was contagious and he passed this along to friends and family alike, most especially his kids, who learned so much from their dad. Due to COVID-19 considerations, a celebration of Jerry's life will be held at a later date. Family and friends will be notified. In lieu of flowers, consider donations to Montgomery Hospice Casey House, Doctors Without Borders, or Planned Parenthood.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Jerry's passing. He was the best man at my wedding. Jerry and I rock climbed and worked at Hudson Bay Outfitters together. He was an amazing person and had a great deal of influence on my life and political views. Introduced me to punk rock, cooking, cross country skiing, and biking. I have fond memories of belaying him at Seneca Rocks where I talked him into leading a 5.8 climb when he took about a 15 foot fall on my new rope. Jerry fought a hard and courageous fight. The world is diminished with his passing.

My mother Margaret Tennis England was best friends with her cousin Marilyn. Our family lived in Germantown in the 50´s and 60´s and would visit Peoria Heights to see our grandparents. We would often go to Lake Avenue to visit the Yates´ and Nelsons´, and Mark and I would play with David and Jerry. I have very fond memories of getting together on July 4th to drink Nehi soda and watch fireworks from the backyard of Uncle Guy and Aunt Maude. Eventually we all left the Peoria area. Jerry kept in touch with my parents over the years and shared their interest in genealogy. He sent me a very nice message after my mother passed last December. Anita, Marian and I were very sorry to hear of your loss and offer our deepest condolences.

A sad loss of a good man. Anita and all, I am thinking of you and sending love. "When it seems that our sorrow is too great to be borne let us think of the great family of the heavy-hearted into which our grief has given us entrance, and inevitably, we will feel about us, their arms and their understanding." - Helen Keller

My favorite memory of Jerry is seeing him and Anita across the courtyard at my wedding celebration and knowing that he and Anita were blessing my union with Meredith.
I met Jerry when he and I were working at the same company with offices close to each other. Being in IT, Jerry dealt with a lot of angst, which he met with kindness and empathy, and mostly corrected user errors. Whenever Jerry talked about Anita, you knew he was speaking of his beloved, respected, and cherished wife.
Rest peacefully, beautiful soul. I hope we meet again.

Dear Anita,
May Jerry be in peace, and the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. The love you and Jerry shared for each other was epic. He will be terribly missed but never forgotten. Our hearts grieve with you.

Jerry and his brother David was/are my closest cousins, me always the little kid. From playing Superman in Peoria Heights to hanging out in his folks basement with Anita and his friends listening to new music, Jerry will always have a special place in my heart.

Anita, Rei, Ben and Jacky, my deepest condolences. We are bound by the bonds of family forever!
