Joel Greenstein

Joel Greenstein, a resident of McLean, Virginia, peacefully passed away at home on September 28, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 83 years old. Mr. Greenstein was born to Monte and Dorothy Greenstein (nee Phillips) in 1942 in Lynn, Massachusetts. He spent his younger years enjoying time with his extended family, trips to Maine beaches, and working the nickel games at Revere Beach. He attended Boston University on a Latin scholarship and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. In 1965, he married the light of his life and best friend, Jane Greenstein (nee Gordon), who preceded him in death. They were married for 57 years, and part of the secret of their success included his easy-going manner and kind, gentle nature. Mr. Greenstein was also a loving, supportive father who coached his daughters' sports teams, patiently taught them endless practical skills, and supplied entertainment from a repertoire of jokes that would make any dad joke teller proud.
After college, Mr. Greenstein moved to Washington, DC, where he began a successful 30+ year career in the federal government. As a young professional with two small children, Mr. Greenstein earned an MBA from American University. He retired from life as a public servant in 1997 with a Meritorious Service Award from the Department of Interior. During his retirement, he was an active member of the Sea Colony community at Bethany Beach, where he served for many years as a board member for his condo association. One of his greatest joys was spending time at the beach with friends and family.
Mr. Greenstein is survived by his daughters, Dr. Dede Greenstein, PhD, and Pam Harrison; grandchildren, Caroline and Jack Harrison, and Sam Greenstein; son-in-law, Robert Barker Harrison IV; and daughter-in-law, Dr. Annie Weissman, MD.
A Memorial Service will be held at a future date. Donations in Mr. Greenstein's memory can be sent to the Brandywine Valley SPCA.
